Abstract: A method for operating a three-dimensional object printer compensates for inoperative ejectors. The method identifies image data values associated with an inoperative ejector that stored in a memory with other image data values for a three-dimensional object to be printed by the three-dimensional object printer. The method replaces the image data values associated with the inoperative ejector with image data values associated with an operative ejector that correspond to a material that is different than a material ejected by the inoperative ejector and operates a plurality of ejectors with reference to the other image data values and the replaced image data values to enable the operative ejector to eject drops of the material that is different than the material ejected by the inoperative ejector into the three-dimensional object at positions where the inoperative ejector would have ejected material.

Abstract: An additive manufacturing system operates an actuator to move an extruder with reference to a selected first zig-zag pattern to sparsely fill an interior region of an object by extruding a swath of thermoplastic material that has straight portions connected by angled portions. After a first pass using the first zig-zag pattern is completed, a second zig-zag pattern is used to form a complementary swath that forms rigid structure with the first swath. Use of the two patterns is alternated to sparsely fill the interior region in multiple layers of the object until a predetermined distance from a solid fill structure or surface is detected. Transition patterns are then used to increase the density of the swaths in the interior region in the next successive layers of the object until the layer is reached where a solid fill surface is formed over the swaths formed using the transition patterns.

Abstract: A printer includes a printhead configured to eject high viscosity material and refill a reservoir in the printhead with high viscosity material. The printhead includes a transducer having an electroactive element and a member to which the electroactive element is mounted. An electrical signal activates the electroactive element to move the electroactive element and the member in the reservoir of high viscosity material. This movement thins the high viscosity material and enables the printhead to eject the thinned material while refilling the reservoir. The apertures through which the thinned material is ejected share a common manifold without separate chambers for each of the apertures.
