Abstract:
The invention describes improved methods and compositions for producing a recombinant protein, e.g., an antibody, in mammalian cell culture. In addition, the invention provides improved cell culture media, including improved production media, feed solutions, and combination feeds, which may be used to improve protein productivity in mammalian cell culture.
Abstract:
A phototherapy apparatus is disclosed including: a handpiece including a body member and a grip; a plurality of elongated light transmitting elements, each of the elements extending between a proximal end enclosed within the body member and a distal end located outside of and distal to the body member; an ultraviolet light source; a light collection element; and one or more optical coupling elements. The proximal ends of the light transmitting elements are located in close proximity to each other The light collection element is configured to collect at least a portion of the light emitted from the light source. The one or more optical coupling elements are configured to direct at least a portion of the collected light to the proximal ends of the light transmitting elements to couple at least portion of the collected light into the light transmitting elements The light coupled into each of the light transmitting elements is transmitted along the element and emitted from the distal end.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to improved dispensers for a tablet containing or consisting of a dissolvable composition which, when contacted with water, will elute one or more chemical compounds to the water. More particularly the present invention relates to such an improved dispenser for a tablet which according to one aspect of the invention is particularly useful with, or forms a part of a device for the treatment of water, particularly a device useful in the purification of water.
Abstract:
A method of detecting and treating cancerous or cancer-supporting tissue by applying low-power density electromagnetic signals to the tissue, inducing acoustic signals from a portion of the tissue that exhibits an electrical conductivity gradient, receiving the thus-induced acoustic signals and from them identifying the location of the tissue portion, applying time-reversal to the thus received acoustic signals, accumulating the strength of the time-reversed acoustic signals, and then applying the thus strengthened acoustic signals to the identified tissue portion.
Abstract:
A medical diagnostic method using systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and pulse frequency of a patient is provided to compute a normalized diastolic distensibility value and a normalized peripheral resistance value, and to automatically compute the product of the normalized diastolic distensibility value and the normalized peripheral resistance value to generate a first product value. The first product value is compared to a stored distribution of normalized diastolic distensibility and a normalized peripheral resistance values for comparable individuals to determine if the first product value is equivalent to a value determined to indicate an abnormal condition. Particular values of the computed parameters aid in determining the etiology of hypertension and direct selection of pharmacotherapy.
Abstract:
A method for fabricating a quartz nanoresonator which can be integrated on a substrate, along with other electronics is disclosed. In this method a quartz substrate is bonded to a base substrate. The quartz substrate is metallized so that a bias voltage is applied to the resonator, thereby causing the quartz substrate to resonate at resonant frequency greater than 100 MHz. The quartz substrate can then be used to drive other electrical elements with a frequency equal to its resonant frequency. The quartz substrate also contains tuning pads to adjust the resonant frequency of the resonator. Additionally, a method for accurately thinning a quartz substrate of the resonator is provided. The method allows the thickness of the quartz substrate to be monitored while the quartz substrate is simultaneously thinned
Abstract:
One disclosed embodiment comprises a method for treating lesions in the carotid artery of a mammalian body. The method comprises transcervical access and blocking of blood flow through the common carotid artery (with or without blocking of blood flow through the external carotid artery), shunting blood from the internal carotid artery and treating the lesion in the carotid artery.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for sorption and desorption of molecular gas contained by storage sites of graphite nano-filaments randomly disposed in three-dimensional reticulated aerogel.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to generating a smooth muscle cell from another cell, such as a fibroblast, by delivering to the cell serum response factor, a CRP, and a GATA. In specific embodiments, the methods are utilized to generate vascular tissue and/or to repair vascular tissue.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an in the toilet bowl article where the active compositions, for example, a cleaning, disinfecting, and/or lime scale removing composition is separate from a perfume. The composition and perfume are placed in a housing such that the composition is in the path of the flushing toilet water and the perfume is not in the path of the flushing toilet water.
