Abstract: An optical network includes a transmitter portion configured to transmit a digitized stream of symbols over a digital optical link, a mapping unit disposed within the transmitter portion and configured to code the transmitted digitized stream of symbols with a mapping code prior to transmission over the digital optical link, a receiver portion configured to recover the coded stream of symbols from the digital optical link, and a demapping unit disposed within the receiver portion and configured to map the recovered coded stream of symbols into an uncoded digitized signal corresponding to the digitized stream of symbols at the transmitter portion prior to coding by the mapping unit.

Abstract: Systems and methods presented herein provide for improved duplex communications in an RF cable network comprising a plurality of CMs. In one embodiment, a system includes a CMTS operable to transmit downstream communications to the CMs and to process upstream communications from the CMs. The system also includes a duplex RF communication path between the CMTS and the CMs. The CMTS is further operable to transmit a control signal that directs a first of the CMs to transmit, to direct the remaining CMs to receive the transmission from the first CM, to direct the CMs to report received power levels of the transmission from the first CM, and to calculate RF isolations of the remaining CMs with respect to the first CM based on the reported power levels.

Abstract: An optical network includes a transmitting portion configured to (i) encode an input digitized sequence of data samples into a quantized sequence of data samples having a first number of digits per sample, (ii) map the quantized sequence of data samples into a compressed sequence of data samples having a second number of digits per sample, the second number being lower than the first number, and (iii) modulate the compressed sequence of data samples and transmit the modulated sequence over a digital optical link. The optical network further includes a receiving portion configured to (i) receive and demodulate the modulated sequence from the digital optical link, (ii) map the demodulated sequence from the second number of digits per sample into a decompressed sequence having the first number of digits per sample, and (iii) decode the decompressed sequence.

Abstract: A digital receiver is configured to process a polarization multiplexed carrier from a communication network. The polarization multiplexed carrier includes a first polarization and a second polarization. The receiver includes a first lane for transporting a first input signal of the first polarization, a second lane for transporting a second input signal of the second polarization, a dynamic phase noise estimation unit disposed within the first lane and configured to determine a phase noise estimate of the first input signal, a first carrier phase recovery portion configured to remove carrier phase noise from the first polarization based on a combination of the first input signal and a function of the determined phase noise estimate, and a second carrier phase recovery portion configured to remove carrier phase noise from the second polarization based on a combination of the second input signal and the function of the determined phase noise estimate.

Abstract: A skew compensation system for a coherent optical communication network includes a transmitter modulator having a first driver input for receiving a first signal from a first channel, a second driver input for receiving a second signal from a second channel, a source input for receiving a continuous wave source signal, and a modulation output in communication with an optical transport medium of the network. The system further includes a tunable delay line disposed between the second channel and the second driver input for inserting a pre-determined training sequence onto the second signal prior to the second driver input, and a processor for determining a skew amount between the second signal at the second driver input and the first signal at the first driver input, calculating a pre-compensation value corresponding to the skew amount, and reducing the skew amount at the modulation output according to the pre-compensation value.

Abstract: A coherent passive optical network extender apparatus includes an extender transceiver for communication with an associated optical headend. The extender transceiver includes at least one receiving portion, at least one transmitting portion, and an extension processor. The apparatus further includes a signal adaptation unit configured to convert a downstream electrical transmission lane into a plurality of individual wavelengths. Each of the converted individual wavelengths are for transmission to one of an optical node and an end user. The apparatus further includes a plurality of transceivers, disposed within the signal adaptation unit, and configured to process and transmit the converted individual wavelengths as a bundle for retransmission to the respective end users.

Abstract: A transmitter is configured to transmit data to a receiver over a communications network. The transmitter includes a memory for storing computer-executable instructions and a processor in operable communication with the memory. The processor is configured to (i) collect spectrum data of a spectral band over a first sampling interval, and (ii) store the collected spectrum data in the memory. The transmitter further includes a common path distortion (CPD) detection unit configured to (i) sample the collected spectrum data, over a second sampling interval less than the first sampling interval, for a plurality of sub-bands within the spectral band, (ii) analyze the spectral band and each sub-band for indications of common path distortion, and (iii) inject a test signal configured for detection at a headend of the communications network. The transmitter further includes a modem portion configured to operably communicate with the headend and the receiver.
