Abstract: A method of modifying a substrate comprising an etching step comprising contacting one or more primary surfaces of a glass, glass-ceramic, or ceramic substrate with a solution for a time period of 20 minutes to 8 hours to generate one or more etched primary surfaces, the solution comprising over 10 percent by weight of one or more alkali hydroxides, the solution having a temperature within the range of 100° C. to 150° C., the substrate having a thickness between the primary surfaces that decreases during the time period by 5 μm to 100 μm at a rate of 2 μm per hour or greater. The solution of the etching step does not comprise hydrogen fluoride. The one or more alkali hydroxides of the solution of the etching step can be sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), or a combination of both sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide.

The textured region comprises a sparkle of 2% or less. Further, the bulk composition comprises about 40 mol % to 80 mol % silica and the textured region composition comprises at least about 40 mol % silica.

Abstract: A chemical ion exchange process, including: dissolving a carbonate salt in a molten salt bath disposed in a furnace and including a non-lithium non-carbonate alkali salt; immersing a lithium-containing glass-based substrate in the molten salt bath including the dissolved carbonate salt and the non-lithium non-carbonate alkali salt, where immersing the lithium-containing glass-based substrate in the molten salt bath results in an ion-exchange between the lithium-containing glass-based substrate and the molten salt bath and results in the formation of a lithium-containing carbonate salt in the molten salt bath; and reducing a concentration of the lithium-containing carbonate salt in the molten salt bath or increasing a solubility limit of the lithium-containing carbonate salt in the molten salt bath.

Abstract: Embodiments of anti-glare substrates and articles including the same are disclosed. In one or more embodiments, the anti-glares substrate includes a textured surface with a plurality of features having an average cross-sectional dimension of about 30 micrometers or less. The substrate or article exhibits a transmission haze of 10% or less, a PPDr of about 7% or less or 6% or less, and a DOI of about 80 or less. Method for forming the anti-glare substrates are also disclosed and include etching a surface of a substrate with an etchant having low water solubility to provide an etched surface, and removing a portion of the etched surface. The method includes generating a plurality of insoluble crystals (e.g., any one or more of K2SiF6 and K3AlF6) on the surface while etching the surface. The etchant may include a potassium salt, an organic solvent and a fluoride containing acid.

Abstract: A glass article is provided that includes: a glass substrate comprising a thickness and a primary surface; and a textured region defined by the primary surface. The textured region comprises a low spatial frequency region and a high spatial frequency region substantially superimposed within the low spatial frequency region. Further, the low spatial frequency region comprises an average lateral feature size that exceeds an average lateral feature size of the high spatial frequency region. In addition, the textured region comprises a surface roughness (Ra) from about 10 nm to about 1000 nm.

Abstract: A glass substrate comprises: a first surface with surface features having an average width, an average height, a ratio of the average width to the average height of from about 0.04 to about 0.24, and the first surface has a haze value of 3% to 40%. The glass substrate can be transparent to electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectrum. The glass substrate can have a composition of: 61-75 mol. % SiO2; 7-15 mol. % Al2O3; 0-12 mol. % B2O3; 9-21 mol. % Na2O; 0-4 mol. % K2O; 0-7 mol. % MgO; and 0-3 mol. % CaO. The first surface can have an average surface roughness Ra of from 10 nm to 1,000 nm. The first surface can have an average characteristic largest feature size of from 200 nm to 50 μm. The ratio of the average width to the average height can be from 0.06 to about 0.08.

Abstract: Methods for reducing a defective area in a strengthened substrate to produce a non-defective substrate are provided. The methods include contacting a strengthened defective substrate with a heated salt bath containing at least one monovalent salt, and removing the strengthened substrate from the bath. The strengthened substrate, before being contacted with the salt bath, is a defective substrate having at least one defective area and one or more non-defective area. Upon removal from the salt bath, at least one defective area has been reduced or substantially removed to produce a non-defective substrate.

Abstract: A glass sensor substrate including metallizable through vias and related process is provided. The glass substrate has a first major surface, a second major surface and an average thickness of greater than 0.3 mm. A plurality of etch paths are created through the glass substrate by directing a laser at the substrate in a predetermined pattern. A plurality of through vias through the glass substrate are etched along the etch paths using a hydroxide based etching material. The hydroxide based etching material highly preferentially etches the substrate along the etch path. Each of the plurality of through vias is long compared to their diameter for example such that a ratio of the thickness of the glass substrate to a maximum diameter of each of the through vias is greater than 8 to 1.
