Abstract: A method of making an electrode material for an electrode in an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions is provided, where a protective coating is applied to an electrode precursor material. The electrode precursor may be a silicon-containing composition. The protective coating is selected from the group consisting of: an oxide-based coating, a fluoride-based coating, and a nitride-based coating. The method also includes lithiating the electrode precursor material in a continuous process. The continuous process is conducted in a reactor having a first reaction chamber and a second reaction chamber to form a lithiated electrode material comprising the protective coating.

Abstract: A battery cell includes an anode, a cathode, a liquid electrolyte, and a battery cell case. The battery cell case is configured to house the anode, the cathode, and the liquid electrolyte and includes a case interior wall arranged proximate one of the anode and the cathode, a battery case ceiling, and a battery case floor catching and collecting the liquid electrolyte due to force of gravity. The case interior wall defines a pattern of surface tension varying between hydrophobic and hydrophilic along the case interior wall between the battery case floor and the battery cell ceiling. The pattern of surface tension thereby facilitates self-propulsion of the liquid electrolyte in opposition to the force of gravity and a predetermined distribution of the liquid electrolyte along the battery cell wall.

Abstract: A system for inspecting a battery component includes a heating device configured to heat a surface of the battery component to a selected temperature, an optical-visible imaging device configured to take an optical image of the surface, a thermal imaging device configured to take a thermal image of the surface, and a processor configured to acquire the optical image and the thermal image. The processor is configured to correlate the thermal image with the optical image, identify a feature of interest in at least one of the optical image and the thermal image, determine a geometric characteristic and a temperature characteristic associated with the feature of interest, and determine whether the feature of interest is a defect based on the geometric characteristic and the temperature characteristic.

Abstract: A battery cell monitoring system provides a direct measurement of electrical and heat distributions in a battery cell, using segmented elements that are in direct contact with an electrode of the battery. The battery cell monitoring system provides distributed local through-plane current, temperature, and pressure measurements with power for operation of the battery being supplied via battery tabs. An embodiment of a battery cell monitoring system includes a two-dimensional current collector array, a two-dimensional temperature sensor array, a plurality of pressure sensors, and a plurality of reference electrodes interspersed within the current collector array. The current collector array, the temperature sensor array, the pressure sensors, and the reference electrodes are arranged on a printed circuit board. The current collector array is configured to have direct physical contact with an electrode of the battery cell. The current collector array is disposed within a container of the battery cell.

Abstract: A negative electrode for an electrochemical cell of a secondary lithium metal battery is manufactured by a method in which a precursor solution is applied to a major surface of a lithium metal substrate to form a precursor coating thereon. The precursor solution includes an organophosphate, a nonpolar organic solvent, and a lithium-containing inorganic ionic compound dissolved therein. At least a portion of the nonpolar organic solvent is removed from the precursor coating to form a protective interfacial layer on the major surface of the lithium metal substrate. The protective interfacial layer exhibits a composite structure including a carbon-based matrix component and a lithium-containing dispersed component. The lithium-containing dispersed component is embedded in the carbon-based matrix component and includes a plurality of lithium-containing inorganic ionic compounds, e.g., lithium phosphate (Li3PO4) and lithium nitrate (LiNO3).

Abstract: Presented are electrochemical devices with in-stack pressure sensors, methods for making/using such devices, and battery cells with electrode stacks having an electrode separator assembly with a piezoelectric layer for in-stack pressure sensing and dendrite cleaning. An electric machine, such as a lithium-class secondary battery cell for example, includes a device housing with an ion-conducting electrolyte located inside the device housing. A stack of working electrodes is also located inside the device housing, in electrochemical contact with the electrolyte. At least one electrode separator assembly is located inside the device housing, interposed between a neighboring pair of the working electrodes. The electrode separator assembly includes a pair of separator layers that transmit therethrough the ions of the electrolyte, and a piezoelectric layer that is interposed between the two separator layers. The piezoelectric layer outputs an electrical signal in response to deformation of one or both of the neighboring working electrodes.

Abstract: A negative electrode according to various aspects of the present disclosure includes a negative electroactive material and a layer. The negative electroactive material includes a lithium-aluminum alloy. The layer is disposed directly on at least a portion of the negative electroactive material and coupled to the negative electroactive material. The layer includes anodic aluminum oxide and has a plurality of pores. The present disclosure also provides an electrochemical cell including the negative electrode. In certain aspects, the negative electroactive material is electrically conductive and functions as a negative electrode current collector such that the electrochemical cell is free of a distinct negative electrode current collector component. In certain aspects, the layer is ionically conductive and electrically insulating and functions as a separator such that the electrochemical cell is free of a distinct separator component. In various aspects, the present disclosure also provides a method of making the negative electrode.

Abstract: A ceramic-coated separator for a lithium-containing electrochemical cell and methods of preparing the ceramic-coated separator are provided. The ceramic-coated separator may be manufactured by preparing a slurry that includes one or more lithiated oxides and a binder and disposing the slurry onto one or more surfaces of a porous substrate. The slurry may be dried to from a ceramic coating on the one or more surfaces of the porous substrate so as to create the ceramic-coated separator. The ceramic coating may include one or more lithiated oxides selected from Li2SiO3, LiAlO2, Li2TiO3, LiNbO3, Li3PO4, Li2CrO4, and Li2Cr2O7.

Abstract: A method of modifying a carbonate layer formed on a surface of an electrochemical cell component is provided. The surface includes a ceramic oxide. The carbonate layer includes a carbonate and is substantially non-conductive to lithium ions and sodium ions. The method includes contacting the carbonate layer with a modifying agent to form a mixture and causing the modifying agent to incorporate into the carbonate layer and form a modified hybrid layer including a eutectic mixture of the modifying agent and the carbonate. The modified hybrid layer is conductive to lithium ions and sodium ions.

Abstract: A negative electrode for an electrochemical cell of a secondary lithium metal battery may comprise a metal substrate, a lithium metal layer overlying a major surface of the metal substrate, and a protective interfacial layer formed on a major surface of the lithium metal layer over the metal substrate. The protective interfacial layer may comprise a stack of monomolecular layers including at least one aryl siloxane monomolecular layer overlying the major surface of the lithium metal layer. The protective interfacial layer may be formed on the major surface of the lithium metal layer by applying a mixture of monoaryl silanes to the major surface of the lithium metal layer.
