    Abstract: A multiview backlight includes a light guide to guide light as guided light having a first direction and a different second direction within the light guide. The multiview backlight includes a multibeam element array having a plurality of spaced apart multibeam elements that each include a plurality of scattering sub-elements configured to scatter out portions of the guided light as directional light beams corresponding to different view directions of a multiview display. A first scattering sub-element of the plurality of scattering sub-elements is configured to selectively scatter out a portion of the guided light having the first direction and a second scattering sub-element of the plurality of scattering sub-elements is configured to selectively scatter out at least a portion of the guided light having the second direction.

    Abstract: A multiview backlight, multiview display, and method of multiview backlight operation include reflective multibeam elements having one or more curved reflective surfaces configured to provide emitted light having directional light beams with directions corresponding to view directions of a multiview image. The multiview backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light and an array of the reflective multibeam elements. Each reflective multibeam element includes a plurality of reflective sub-elements and is configured to reflectively scatter out a portion of the guided light as the emitted light. The multiview display includes the multiview backlight and an array of light valves to modulate the directional light beams to provide the multiview image. A reflective sub-element of the reflective sub-element plurality includes a curved reflective surface, a surface curvature of the curved reflective surface being in a plane parallel to a guiding surface of the light guide.

    Abstract: Polychromatic backlighting employs a grating coupler to diffractively split and redirect collimated light coupled into a light guide. A polychromatic grating-coupled backlight includes a light guide configured to guide light and a light source to provide collimated polychromatic light. The polychromatic grating-coupled backlight further includes the grating coupler diffractively split and redirect to provide a plurality of light beams. Each light beam of the plurality represents a respective different color of the polychromatic light and is configured to propagate within the light guide as guided light at a color-specific, non-zero propagation angle corresponding to the respective different color of polychromatic light. An electronic display includes the polychromatic grating-coupled backlight and further includes a diffraction grating to diffractively couple out a portion of the guided light and a light valve array to modulate the coupled-out light as an electronic display pixel.
