A server supporting a point of sale transaction includes an input for receiving from a point of sale terminal transaction details for a customer and a second input for receiving update information from an update service; a processing engine receiving the transaction details which include product data from a product including first price data including a price for the product, the processing engine receiving second price data from the update information, the second price data pertaining to the product, comparing the first price data with the second price data and issuing a voucher request based on the comparison; an update component issuing periodic polling messages, and responsive to the polling messages receiving the update information at the second input, the update information including one of a price file containing the second price data and a configuration file containing configuration parameters for controlling operation of the processing engine.

A merchandise identification apparatus includes an image acquisition unit, a first extraction unit, a second extraction unit, and a determination unit. The image acquisition unit acquires a merchandise image of a merchandise to be purchased. The first extraction unit extracts an image of a freshness degree label from the merchandise image acquired by the image acquisition unit. The second extraction unit extracts image information indicating a degree of freshness of the merchandise from the image of the freshness degree label extracted by the first extraction unit. The determination unit determines a discount to a purchase price of the merchandise according to the image information indicating the degree of freshness of the merchandise extracted by the second extraction unit.

According to one aspect of the present invention, a method is provided in which a first field and a second field of a data record are displayed to a user using a client program, the second field having one or more attributes that are dependent upon the value of the first field. In response to a detection that the value of the first field has changed, the value of the first field is sent to a server program. The server program is configured to process the change in value of the first field and determine corresponding changes with respect to the one or more attributes of the second field. The corresponding changes with respect to the one or more attributes of the second field are sent from the server program to the client program.

The area has a length and a depth. The label includes product information printed thereon for identifying the at least one product for display on the shelf, and first and second space indicators for indicating a position, corresponding to a portion of the length of the shelf, at which the at least one product is to be placed. The label is constructed and arranged to have a predetermined length that is coextensive with the portion of the length of the area of the shelf on which the at least one product is to be placed. The first and second space indicators define the predetermined length. The first space indicator indicates where the portion of the length of the area of the shelf begins and the second space indicator indicates where the portion of the length of the area of the shelf ends.

A method for applying coupon rules to a financial transaction includes storing a plurality of coupon rules, each coupon rule associated with a consumer and a merchant and including an amount modifier and funding account number; receiving an authorization request for a financial transaction, the authorization request including a consumer identifier, a merchant identifier, and a transaction amount; identifying, at least one coupon rule of the plurality of coupon rules where the associated consumer corresponds to the consumer identifier and the associated merchant corresponds to the merchant identifier; modifying the financial transaction based on the at least one coupon rule by modifying the transaction amount based on the amount modifier; and transmitting a reply to the authorization request, the reply to the authorization request including at least the modified transaction amount.

Methods are disclosed for managing payment for such transactions at a POS, including transactions involving payment for both in-store purchases and online orders. Methods are also disclosed for managing inventory and price changes for such transactions where payment can occur at any time in a pay period following order creation. Also disclosed are methods for processing refunds for online orders for which payment was made at a POS. Finally, methods for preventing fraud and abuse as well as restricting the availability of this payment method for certain items are disclosed.
