A method and system for controlling an electric device via a remote control panel comprises providing a network server that includes a database reflecting user preferences and statistics of usage of the device by the respective users; providing an application proxy on the device which is capable of controlling the device; providing the panel with controls configured to highlight the relevant control function; and associating at least one user with at least one relevant control. When a control is operated by a user, the panel operates in a mode associated with the profile of the user and with the pressed control. Usage statistics accumulated on the server is assessed by the server. An event that indicates the need for making a certain action to control the device by a certain user results in sending, by the server, a PUSH-notification containing information on the user who should exercise control and on the required control to the device.

The control interface is displayed. Alternatively, a process and apparatus provide a uniform user interface and have adaptable communications protocols. The process and apparatus displays a uniform control interface for operation with a plurality of devices. The control interface includes a plurality of buttons that controls operation of the plurality of devices. Further, an image of a device is captured. In addition, the process and apparatus identify a device identifier of the device based upon the image. A communications protocol is also retrieved based upon the device identifier.

A vehicle computing system enabling one or more processors to establish a communication connection with at least one of a plurality of handheld computing devices within a vehicle while enabling and determining infotainment control based on the location of the handheld device in the vehicle. The system may determine if the at least one of a plurality of handheld computing devices is a driver or non-driver handheld computing device based on a detected location of the communication connection. The system may determine that the at least one of a plurality of handheld computing devices is a non-driver handheld computing device based on the detected location, therefore enabling infotainment control from the non-driver handheld device. The system may determine that the at least one of a plurality of handheld computing devices is a driver handheld computing device based on the detected location, therefore limiting infotainment control from the driver handheld device.
