In a discharge tube lighting system for use in a vehicle, a heat generating element, which is made of metal material, is formed on an outer surface of a tube element of the discharge tube along the longitudinal direction of the tube element, and a temperature detecting element is provided on a surface of the heat generating element. The heat generating element is electrically driven to heat the discharge tube at a starting period of lighting the discharge tube when a temperature of the heat generating element detected by the temperature detecting element is lower than a predetermined temperature. The heat generating element is formed in a rectangular shape and conformally disposed on a portion of the tube. The heater element has first and second ends which are disposed with respect to the electrodes of the tube to cause an electric field to be provided between each electrode and the corresponding end of the heater element.

A starter circuit for metal halide discharge lamps in which a pair of spiral line generators are coupled between the source of lamp operating power and the electrodes of the high intensity discharge lamp. The spiral line generators are connected across the electrodes, in accordance with the invention, in a manner such that the high voltage short duration pulses from the spiral line generators are substantially additive across the discharge lamp electrodes, thus, in effect, substantially doubling the breakdown voltage available across the discharge lamp electrodes.

The ballast temperature in the base up position of a miniature arc discharge lamp is reduced, increasing its lifetime, by placing a thin transparent thermal convection/radiation baffle between the arc tube and lamp filament, which are the heat source, and the interface of the envelope with the ballast housing. Greater temperature reduction is realized by putting insulation inside the housing cover and reducing the diameter of wires supporting the arc tube and filament, the latter a ballast resistor.

A piezoelectric crystal spark plug includes a body similar to a conventional spark plug, a central electrode extending from the bottom end of the body, and a ground electrode disposed near but spaced from one end of the central electrode and connected to the body. A piezoelectric crystal is included within the body and one side of the crystal is electrically coupled to the other end of the central electrode. A deforming device is also included within the body to deform the crystal and cause it to produce and apply an electrical signal to the central electrode. This electrical signal produces a spark between the central and ground electrode similar to a conventional spark plug. The deforming device can include a striker element for striking the crystal to deform it, a second low voltage piezoelectric crystal coupled to the first mentioned piezoelectric crystal so that when a low voltage signal is applied to the second crystal it deforms to thereby deform the first piezoelectric crystal, a solenoid disposed in the body to strike or apply a force to the piezoelectric crystal to deform it in response to a low voltage signal, or other suitable deforming devices.

The electromagnetic interference produced by arc discharge lamps and other devices operating at frequencies in excess of 15,000 Hz is reduced by providing a current path external to the envelope containing the discharge, the current flow in the path being oriented so as to produce a magnetic field generally in opposition to the magnetic field generated by the current in the arc discharge. The present invention is particularly applicable to circular fluorescent lamps with a centrally disposed ballast operating at relatively high frequencies.

A light source, including a high pressure discharge lamp and a starting pulse generator, such as a spiral line pulse generator, utilizes a generally straight elongated conductor, or starting aid, in close proximity to an outer surface of the discharge tube to provide efficient coupling of the starting pulse to the discharge lamp. The starting aid extends between a region proximate one of the electrodes and a region proximate the other of the electrodes. The starting aid provides within the discharge lamp an ionization path of minimum length free of circumferential turns when the conductor is energized by the pulse generator. The starting aid can be affixed to the discharge tube or can be mounted in one or more support brackets.

A lighting unit is described utilizing an energy efficient metal vapor arc lamp as the main source of light supplemented by a standby filamentary light source producing light when the arc lamp is being started, the filament thereof serving as a resistive ballast for the arc lamp under normal operation. The lighting unit is designed as a more efficient replacement for the incandescent lamp. The lighting unit includes a rectifier for conversion of 60 hertz ac to dc, and a dc energized operating network, including a ferrite transformer and a transistor switch. The operating network produces an output adapted to each operating state of the arc lamp, including the provision of a high ignition potential, a power boost for the lamp during the glow to arc transition, warm-up and ballasting provisions, and means for sustaining the arc during transients which reduce the line voltage. The filamentary light source provides useful standby illumination while the arc lamp is being started, the amount being reduced to a low value as the arc lamp approaches normal light output.
