Abstract: Various embodiments are directed to surgical instruments comprising an end effector, a shaft and a jaw assembly. The end effector may comprise an ultrasonic blade extending distally substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis. The shaft may extend proximally from the end effector along the longitudinal axis. The jaw assembly may comprise first and second jaw members. The jaw assembly may be pivotable about a first axis substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis from a first position where the first and second jaw members are substantially parallel to the ultrasonic blade to a second position. Additionally, the first and second jaw members may be pivotable about a second axis substantially perpendicular to the first axis.

Abstract: A system for adjusting a parameter of a medical instrument in a specific context is disclosed. The system includes a medical hub configured to access a first contextual dataset representing a first circumstance pertaining to the specific context, access a second contextual dataset representing a second circumstance pertaining to the specific context, arrange the first and second contextual datasets in a hierarchy of priority, determine that at least a first portion of the first contextual dataset is relevant, determine that at least a second portion of the second contextual dataset is relevant, resolve a difference between the first and second portion, and program the medical instrument by adjusting the parameter in accordance with the resolved difference, wherein the medical instrument is configured to be used utilizing the adjusted parameter such that performance of the medical instrument is more effective with the adjusted parameter.

The control circuit is further configured to adjust a response to a sensed parameter based on the progress status.

Abstract: A surgical apparatus comprises a body, an ultrasonic transducer, a shaft, and an end effector. The ultrasonic transducer is operable to convert electrical power into ultrasonic vibrations. The body comprises a pivotal trigger. The shaft couples the end effector and the body together. The end effector comprises a clamp arm and an ultrasonic blade in acoustic communication with the ultrasonic transducer. The ultrasonic blade is operable to deliver ultrasonic vibrations to tissue. Pivotal movement of the trigger causes movement of the clamp arm. The trigger includes a compliant feature configured to limit the amount of force delivered to tissue by the clamp arm. The flexible feature may comprise a flexible band, living hinge, a series of living hinges, or a flexible tab.

Abstract: A control circuit configured to receive a control signal that defines a first phase and a second phase from a surgical generator. The control circuit may include a first resistor, a second resistor in parallel with the first resistor, and a switch in series with the second resistor. The switch may be configured to transition between an open state and a closed state corresponding to an operational mode of a surgical instrument. In the first phase of the control signal, the control circuit is configured to communicate surgical instrument information to the surgical generator. In the second phase of the control signal and in the open state of the switch, the control circuit is configured to provide a first output. In the second phase of the control signal and in the closed state of the switch, the control circuit is configured to provide a second output.

Abstract: A control circuit for a surgical instrument includes a shaft control segment, a first electrical conductor configured to conduct a first electrical signal between the shaft control segment and a releasable surgical instrument cartridge, an electrosurgical energy control segment, a second electrical conductor configured to conduct a second electrical signal between the electrosurgical energy control segment and the releasable surgical instrument cartridge, and a connector electrically coupled to the electrosurgical energy control segment and configured to receive electrosurgical generator energy from an electrosurgical generator. The electrosurgical energy control segment is configured to detect a connection of the electrosurgical generator to the connector and to electrically isolate the shaft control segment from the electrosurgical generator energy when the electrosurgical energy control segment detects the connection of the electrosurgical generator to the connector.

Abstract: A surgical end effector for use with an electrosurgical instrument is disclosed. The end effector comprises a first jaw including a first electrode and a second jaw including a second electrode. The end effector is transitionable from an open configuration to a closed configuration to grasp tissue. The second electrode is laterally offset from the first electrode. The first electrode and the second electrode are configured to cooperate to deliver a bipolar energy to the tissue. The second jaw further comprises a monopolar electrode configured to deliver a monopolar energy to the tissue and a compliant substrate. The monopolar electrode and the second electrode are fixedly attached onto the compliant substrate in a spaced apart arrangement. The compliant substrate is configured to apply a biasing force to the second electrode and the monopolar electrode toward the first jaw in the closed configuration.
