Abstract:
HYDRIDE CARBONYL COMPLEXES OF RHODIUM AND IRIDIUM WITH BIPHYLIC LIGANDS ARE PREPARED BY TREATMENT OF RHODIUM OR IRIDIUM, COMPLEXES OR SALTS THEREOF WITH AN ALKALI METAL HYDROXIDE, ALKOXIDE OR ARYLOXIDE AND A BIPHYLLIC LIGAND AND A MIDL REDUCING AGENT. IN A TYPICAL SYNTHESIS A RHODIUM CARBONYL SALT IS CONTACTED WITH AN ALKALI METAL ALKOXIDE IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LIGAND AND THE HYDRIDE IS FORMED BY SUBSEQUENT OR SIMULTANEOUS CONTACTING WITH A REDUCING AGENT SUCH AS HYDROGEN, CARBON MONOXIDE OR AN OXIDIZABLE ALCOHOL. THE COMPOUNDS HAVE UTILITY AS HYDROFORMYLATION CATALYSTS.
