Abstract: A filter having a substantially cylindrical or slightly tapered body design which has a plurality of elongated apertures formed therethrough. Each aperture is defined side to side by a pair of elongated, wedge-like rib members disposed one on each side of each aperture, and top to bottom by a pair of cross members which present a substantially square top side and an angularly declining bottom side. The end effect is a substantially rectangular entry aperture for fluid flow with the exception of the declining bottom side which promotes smooth, low resistance entry flow. The present invention is also directed to a method of manufacture of filters having the above-described characteristics. In particular, the preferred method involves an injection molding process in which a molten plastic (such as high-density polyethylene, HDPE) is injected into a two-part mold. The mold generally comprises a smooth, substantially cylindrical cavity and a notched and grooved core which is inserted into the cavity in a partial surface to surface contact relationship to complete the filter mold. Due to the extremely close tolerances required by a such a core and cavity surface to surface relationship, unique mold alignment modifications were also developed.

Abstract: A parts washing method which utilizes a centrifugal filter to substantially reduce the need to replace its solvent. Solvent in a washing basin flows down a drain in the parts washing basin, through a screen to a centrifugal filter assembly, with a disposable filter in the filter receptacle of the centrifugal filter assembly. Thus the contaminated solvent flows from the drain, into a disposable filter element located in a spinning filter receptacle, where centrifugal force draws the solvent back into the solvent container while the materials washed from the part remain in the disposable filter element. The clean solvent is collected in a reservoir and recirculated back to the wash basin.

Abstract: A device and a method are described, which are used for precipitating beverage sediment from the rinsing mixture of beverage production machines and which comprise a rinsing conduit, a sediment receptacle and a filtering means. In order to design a device of this type in a structurally simple manner such that it can be serviced more easily, it is suggested that the filtering means should comprise a first and a second filter which are arranged one after the other when seen in the direction of flow of the rinsing mixture and which are each provided with filtrate discharge means and that a flow connection for the rinsing mixture discharged from the rinsing conduit and for the filter cake precipitated on the first filter should be provided, said flow connection bypassing said first filter and leading into the sediment receptacle.

Abstract: A filter is provided which uses a particle barrier with its “dirty” side flow path connected in series with a centrifuge. The “dirty” side flow path has an inlet and an outlet for delivering fluid with particles suspended therein under pressure against the “dirty” surface of the particle barrier. The barrier has a plurality of fluid passages through it which are sized to collect particles suspended in the fluid on the “dirty” surface of the barrier while passing some of the fluid through the barrier. A centrifuge serially connected to the outlet draws fluid containing suspended particles across the “dirty” surface to wash collected particles from the “dirty” surface of the barrier wall.

Abstract: A portable parts washing machine using a washing solvent to wash motor parts or the like. The apparatus has a stowed configuration and an operating configuration. In the operating configuration, a solvent container/wash basin is positioned on a base section which also functions as a solvent reservoir. Solvent is recirculated by a pup and recirculating line fro the reservoir to the wash basin, with the solvent washing the parts and then flowing through a drain in the wash basin into a centrifugal filter. The centrifugal filter removes the contaminates, with the solvent returning to the reservoir. In the stowed configuration, the base section, centrifugal filter and solvent recirculating assembly are stowed in the container.

Abstract: A parts washing apparatus with a centrifugal filter that substantially reduces the need to replace it solvent. The parts washing apparatus comprises a parts washing basin that has a centrifugal filter assembly located below its drain. The parts washing basin sits on top of a solvent container. When in use, the solvent is pumped from the solvent container to the parts washing basin, where it is used to clean parts. The now contaminated solvent flows down a drain in the parts washing basin, through a screen to the centrifugal filter assembly. A disposable filter is included in the filter receptacle of the centrifugal filter assembly. The contaminated solvent flows from the drain, into a disposable filter element located in a spinning filter receptacle, where centrifugal force draws the solvent back into the solvent container while the materials washed from the part remains in the disposable filter element. If desired, separate filter assembly can also be used to polish the solvent. A "retrofit" application for mounting the centrifugal filter assembly in existing parts washers is also described.

Abstract: A line strainer for screening fluid flow in a small diameter conduit is constructed with an integral housing of clear or transparent thermoplastic polymer. A fluid flow channel through the housing center is terminated at opposite ends by sonically welded end fittings. Internally of the housing, a screen chamber is separated from a flow meter chamber by a screen support hub with flow diversion passages. The screen chamber confines a conically formed screen mesh for passing substantially all flow through the housing. The flow meter chamber has conically tapered walls that support radial fins projecting from the walls inwardly to a cylindrical void that confines the metering ball to displacement along the housing axis. A spring bearing against the metering ball resiliently biases the ball toward the flow restriction passage and against the fluid flow direction. The spring bias and conically tapered meter walls cooperate with the flow stream and metering ball to stabilize at a position along the housing axis that is proportional to the flow rate through the screen. As the screen mesh fills to increase flow stream resistance, the metering ball approaches the flow restriction passage signaling a reduced flow rate. The degree of plugging or filling of the screen mesh is therefore indicated by the relative position of the metering ball for a substantially constant pressure source. Additionally, pump performance or system blockage could also be detected by the ball position in the flow meter chamber.

Abstract: Liquor removal from particulate solids such as wet wood pulp is achieved by applying a pneumatic or vapor pressure force through a pad of the wood pulp to compress the solids and to expel liquor from the solids. If air is used as a displacing medium, no wash liquor is added and the solids are simply compressed and some of the liquor is replaced by the gas passing through the suspension. If steam is used, not as a heating medium but as a pressure medium, an increase in liquor removal occurs over and above that removed by gas only due to the condensation of the steam to form a liquid front travelling before the steam through the solid suspension. Hence, in principle, a combination of pressure washing and displacement occurs resulting in a high efficiency in washing. Gas or steam could therefore simply be applied to any conventional operation to increase the washing efficiency both by compression and by displacement.

Abstract: A vertical or horizontal centrifugal separator comprises a drive mechanism including a drive shaft. A flight assembly is attached to the drive shaft and is rotatably driven by it as is a screen assembly which includes a rotor that also is attached to the drive mechanism. The flight assembly generally has a frusto-conical central body with a plurality of spaced apart individual blades or flights aligned longitudinally on the exterior of the central body. The rotor is driven at a separate speed that the flight assembly. A perforated screen assembly is carried by the rotor and is positioned outwardly of the flight assembly. An inlet assembly is positioned above these other elements where material to be separated is fed into the separator through the inlet assembly. An improvement comprises a novel tip formed on each of the individual flights. The novel tips is disposed to cause the solid material to collect on the tips and decelerated the propulsion of the material and cause the material to be propelled from the flights over a greater surface area of the screen thereby decreasing wear of the screen.
