    Abstract: Recyclable asphalt material is processed within a drum for delivery in a heated mass containing aggregate-sized pieces for reuse. The drum is mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis and a mounting arrangement compensates for thermal expansion and contraction of the drum while enabling the desired rotation. The mounting arrangement includes at least one mounting ring placed coaxial with the longitudinal axis and spaced from the drum by a radial spacing. Support rollers support the mounting ring for rotation about the longitudinal axis, and links couple the drum with the mounting ring. Each link has one end coupled pivotally to the drum, and another end coupled pivotally to the mounting ring. The ends of the link are offset circumferentially relative to one another such that the link is movable to vary the radial spacing in response to thermal expansion and contraction of the drum relative to the mounting ring.

    Abstract: A Rotary thermal processor for particulate materials has a rotating drum and a rotating hollow auger. A stationary cylindrical oven with stationary coils surrounds the rotating drum. Hot gas heats a first part of the oven, coil and drum. A rotating hollow auger is heated with hot fluid from the coils. Oven exhaust sweeps evaporated and volatized components of the treated materials to separators and a thermal oxidizer. Cleaned gas from the thermal oxidizer heats a second part of the oven coil and drum and exits a stack. The rotating drum and auger lifts and turns the treated material as it is advanced by the auger.

    Abstract: A foamed asphalt cement nozzle assembly is adapted for use in connection with a mixer for mixing aggregate materials and asphalt cement to make asphalt concrete. The foamed asphalt cement nozzle assembly includes a foamed cement mixing chamber, a first inlet for liquid asphalt cement and a second inlet for water, each of which is in fluid communication with the foamed cement mixing chamber. An outlet for foamed asphalt cement is also provided, which outlet is in fluid communication with both the foamed cement mixing chamber and the mixer. The invention also comprises a method for making asphalt concrete using foamed asphalt cement. The method includes introducing aggregate materials into the mixer and heating the aggregate materials to a temperature at least as high as the boiling point of water but no higher than about 285° F. The method also includes introducing liquid asphalt cement and the water to the foamed cement mixing chamber so as to produce foamed asphalt cement, and introducing foamed asphalt cement into the mixer and mixing it with aggregate materials at a temperature at least as high as the boiling point of water but no higher than about 285° F. to produce asphalt concrete. The invention also includes an apparatus for making asphalt concrete which includes a foamed asphalt cement nozzle assembly.

    Abstract: An asphalt plant includes a plurality of asphalt processing components including a first set of components producing volatile emissions and a second set of components requiring process heat. A separate central burner assembly is adapted to supply heat energy in the form of heated gas to satisfy the process heat requirements of the second set of components. A first duct system is provided which includes a fan and which is adapted to capture a portion of the volatile emissions produced by the first set of components and to convey the captured emissions into the central burner assembly for mitigation.     Abstract: A drum mixer for heating, mixing and drying an aggregate material, such as a mixture of recycled asphaltic pavement and virgin aggregate. The drum mixer includes an inclined drum having a first end and a second end. The drum forms a pre-heating/blending section adjacent the first end, a heating/mixing section adjacent the second end, and a heating/drying/mixing section therebetween. A feed assembly for feeding aggregate material, preferably having a high ratio of RAP material to virgin aggregate, is provided. The feed assembly feeds the aggregate material into the pre-heating/blending section of the drum for movement of the aggregate material sequentially through the pre-heating/blending section, the heating/drying/mixing section and the heating/mixing section. A burner assembly extends from the second end of the drum into the heating/drying/mixing section of the drum. The burner assembly creates a high temperature gas stream which flows through the heating/drying/mixing and pre-heating/blending sections of the drum. Longitudinally extending tubular compartments are positioned in the heating/drying/mixing section of the drum so as to define a plurality of longitudinally-extending aggregate transporting channels. The aggregate transporting channels within the tubular compartments are out of direct contact with the high temperature gas stream while the tubular compartments are exposed to the high temperature gas stream. Thus, the aggregate material is heated, and dried indirectly by the high temperature gas stream as the aggregate material passes through the aggregate transporting channels.
