    Abstract: An optical display comprises: a first waveguide comprising a first surface and a second surface, an input coupler, a fold grating, and an output grating. The input coupler receives collimated first wavelength light from an Input Image Node causes the light to travel within the first waveguide via total internal reflection between the first surface and the second surface to the fold grating. The fold grating provides pupil expansion in a first direction directs the light to the output grating via total internal reflection between the first surface and the second surface. The output grating provides pupil expansion in a second direction different than the first direction and causes the light to exit the first waveguide from the first surface or the second surface. At least one of the input coupler, fold grating and output grating is a rolled k-vector grating, and the fold grating is a dual interaction grating.

    Abstract: A contact image sensor comprises: a waveguiding structure for propagating light in a first direction comprising, in series, a first clad medium, a first core, a switchable grating clad, a second core, and a second clad medium sandwiched by transparent substrates, patterned parallel electrode elements orthogonally traversing the waveguides, a light source, a platen and a detector. Switchable grating regions overlapped by a first voltage-addressed electrode element diffract TIR light from the first core towards the platen. Switchable grating region overlapped by a second voltage-addressed electrode element diffract TIR light reflected from the platen into a TIR path within the second core.

    Abstract: There is provided a colour sequential illumination device comprising in series: first and second light sources; a condenser lens; and a grating device. The grating device comprises at least one Bragg grating. The condenser lens directs light from the first and second sources into the grating device at first and second incidence angles respectively. The grating device diffracts light from the first and second sources into a common direction. Desirably, the Bragg gratings are Electrically Switchable Bragg Gratings. In one embodiment of the invention the light sources are Light Emitting Diodes. Alternatively lasers may be used.
