Abstract: An ozone generator including a pair of electrodes separated by a dielectric element including a plurality of passages defining a corona discharge zone. In one embodiment of the invention, the passages may be convoluted in the sense that the lengths of the passages defining the corona discharge zone are greater than the length of the first and second electrodes and the dielectric element. This configuration provides for an extended period of exposure of the gas to the electric field and may result in production of ozone exhibiting improved stability and oxidation rate. In one embodiment, inner and outer concentric electrodes are held in spaced apart relationship by a concentric tubular dielectric. A corona discharge zone is defined between an inner surface of the outer tubular electrode and the outer surface of the concentric tubular dielectric by a plurality of passages formed on the outer surface of the concentric tubular dielectric.

Abstract: A system and method for treating cooling tower water. The system and method utilizes an apparatus for generating ozone and other atoms and molecules resulting from the bombardment of a feed gas with electrons has, preferably, a first electrode positioned within a channel in a second electrode. The first electrode is a substantially sealed tube made of dielectric material, having at least one electron gun positioned proximate an end thereof for firing electrons into the first electrode. In electrical communication with the electron gun is a rod, maintained in a tube also made of dielectric material, which acts to maintain a constant energy level through the length of the rod and thus the length of the electrode. Within the first electrode is an inert gas which, upon the firing of the electron gun, is formed into a plasma. When a feed gas (generally air) is passed between the first and second electrodes, the electrons and plasma cause the formation of ozone and other atoms and molecules in the feed gas, which products have beneficial uses in the treatment of water and air for different purposes. The treated feed gas is then injected, preferably with a venturi type of injector, into the water to be treated. Preferably, the water is then centrifuged before introduction in the cooling tower system.

Abstract: A reactive gas generator cell includes a high voltage assembly having a high voltage electrode plate and a low voltage assembly having a low voltage electrode plate. Each of the high and low voltage assemblies may include a cover plate and a channel plate. A welded metallic seal may join the high voltage assembly and the low voltage assembly to create a permanently sealed chamber between the assemblies. A refractory metal surface, which may be a tungsten surface, is disposed on at least one of the low voltage electrode plate and the high voltage electrode plate. A dielectric barrier is disposed between the high voltage electrode plate and the low voltage electrode plate. A discharge region for confining a reactive gas is defined, at least in part, by the refractory metal surface and a surface of the dielectric barrier. A spacer, which may be formed from a refractory material, may be positioned between the surface of the dielectric barrier and the refractory metal surface to define a predetermined gap.

Abstract: A concentric tube ozonator which is designed from theoretical considerations to produce ozone efficiently with minimum electrical power consumption. Concentric tube assemblies in the ozonator are designed for ease of construction and replacement of the components thereof, with each concentric tube assembly providing for the relatively precise positioning of the components therein as is required for proper and efficient operation of the ozonator. Each concentric tube assembly is constructed with an outer tubular metal electrode and an inner tubular metal electrode positioned concentrically within the outer tubular electrode. A glass dielectric tube is positioned concentrically and centrally between the outer and inner tubular electrodes. This construction provides an inner concentric annular electrical field discharge gap between the glass dielectric tube and the inner tubular electrode, and an outer concentric annular electric discharge gap between the glass dielectric tube and the outer tubular electrode, in which the feed gas is converted into ozone. The efficiency of the ozonator is optimized by constructing the ozonator such that the inner and outer annular discharge gaps are maintained in the range of 0.45 mm to 0.55 mm, preferably at 0.5 mm, to provide a minimum discharge gap to convert oxygen to ozone to minimize the voltages required during operation thereof.
