Abstract: A borehole strain monitor for soft rock consisting of a sensing unit, an installation/retrieval provision and a read-out unit. The sensing unit has a U-shaped yoke and is fitted with a vibrating wire transducer. A magnetically coupled variable frequency oscillator determines the point of resonance for the tensioned wire. The resonant frequency is measured with a frequency counter. The sensing unit is used, typically, in boreholes between two and six inches in diameter. The unit is firmly seated in the borehole by means of a pad at one side and a positively guided wedge at the other to bring the unit in contact with diametrially opposed portions of the borehole wall.

Abstract: A mechanism for converting a weight into a frequency by means of a tuning fork vibrator having a pair of elongated plate-like vibrating strips extending in parallel with each other, a lever unit with a power pivot, fulcrum pivot and a load pivot, and a base portion, both ends of the tuning fork vibrator being coupled with the power pivot of the lever unit and the base portion, respectively by means of thin plate-like members. The weight to be converted is applied to the load pivot of the lever unit and is transferred to the tuning fork vibrator by means of the lever unit. All the parts of the mechanism are formed integrally from a single plate.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring force or other parameters and temperature. The apparatus includes an oscillator and a vibratory element, such as a quartz crystal, which is caused to resonate by the oscillator at two frequencies f.sub.1 and f.sub.2 selected from the fundamental frequency and its overtone frequencies of the vibratory element. The vibratory element is selected so that the two frequencies f.sub.1 and f.sub.2 both vary with variation in force (or other parameter) applied to the element and with variation in temperature of the element, and so that the magnitude or scale factor of variation for frequency f.sub.1 is different from that for frequency f.sub.2. The apparatus also includes a detection device for detecting the frequencies f.sub.1 and f.sub.2 and for producing signals representing the frequency variation of the two frequencies relative to a reference frequency, and a processor for processing the signals produced by the detector device for determining the force (or other parameter) and temperature to which the vibratory element is subjected.

Abstract: An electro-mechanical load sensor is in the form of a mechanical resonant system with electrostatically coupled electrodes. The mechanical system is formed from a silicon wafer by a selective etching process and comprises a filament of between two terminations 12 and 13 carrying transverse plates M.sub.1 and M.sub.2. Electrostatic (capacitive) coupling to plate electrodes E.sub.1, E.sub.2, E.sub.3 in a self-exciting circuit drives the system. The resonant frequency for angular S vibrations with plates M.sub.1 and M.sub.2 in anti-phase varies with applied load L and is thus a measure of this load.

Abstract: A force and mass meter using two transversally vibrating preloaded strings as the force sensitive members. The two strings are placed in a transverse magnetic field and are caused to vibrate by means of an exciting current flowing across them which is delivered by one exciter each. The exciters consist of a metering bridge, and an operational amplifier deriving the exciting current from the error signal measured across the bridge. Mutual interference of the two exciters is drastically reduced, when the point of common potential of the two exciters is connected with at least one conductor to each of the exciters.

Abstract: A device for measuring and displaying the natural frequency of a wire under tension by magnetically plucking the wire at a selected frequency for a first period and monitoring the mechanical vibrations during a second period. Abstract: A vibrating cylinder, which is electronically driven by a feedback amplifier in response to electromagnetic signals representing the vibrations thereof, is completely surrounded by vacuum and is axially loaded, in tension or compression, whereby the natural frequency thereof varies as a function of the force of axial loading. The loaded end of the cell is sealed to vacuum by a diaphragm. The loading means is connected to a diaphragm of equal area, atmospheric pressure against which loads the cell in a direction oppositely to the first diaphragm, whereby axial loading is equally independent of pressure and density effects. Thermostatic heating obviates temperature variations. A tension embodiment includes a hoop for loading the cylinder, and a compression embodiment comprises a beam-type suspended-pan scale.
