Abstract: An engineered lighting system for use in an inspection system is comprised of an array of light emitting diodes. A specimen is brought into the viewing area, and a current pulse is provided to the diodes of the array to selectively flash all or a portion of the diodes of the array. Reflected light from the specimen is sensed and a digitized image is generated therefrom. An illumination level of the digitized image is adjustable, in whole or in part, by varying the effective lighting intensity of one or more of the diodes of the array during a flash period. The digitized image of the specimen is compared to data indicative of acceptability of the specimen, and acceptance or rejection of the specimen is decided on a basis of a comparison therebetween.

Abstract: The invention is an automated solder joint inspection system for determining the quality of a specular soldered joint through examination of the shape of the joint surface using a series of point light sources and the associated highlight reflections from the joint surface. The light from the point light sources, which is directed toward the solder joint, is reflected in a pattern from the solder joint to an array of light responsive transducers, such as a camera, at a fixed location. Utilizing the intensity values from the light responsive transducer array, a binary grid map is generated for the reflections from each point light source. Using known surface features of solder joints along with curve fitting techniques, a series of grid maps may be mathematically interpreted to reconstruct the solder joint surface. A rule-based system, through comparison with acceptable solder joint surface features, evaluates and classifies the joint for an acceptability determination.

Abstract: A system for line scan processing video signals from a linear array of photoelectric cells so that the signals for individual cells and individual scan sweep are selectively utilized according to sweep number and cell numbers. A signal window is defined for each sweep individually at a predetermined cell for a beginning of the effective video signal and is terminated at another predetermined cell for the end of the effective video signal so that the video signal is processed for only that portion of each sweep covering the area of interest. In optical inspection of an article the significance of changes in the ratio of light intensity at particular cells from the background light intensity is adjusted by sweep and cell number so that such changes which are predictable in certain locations on the article must exceed threshold levels which are different than for other locations. This enables compensation in the inspection of a number of similar articles for regularly occurring marks on the areas of inspection for those articles.

Abstract: Inspection of workpieces traveling along a production line includes on-line inspection of the workpieces at an upstream inspection station to detect possible flaws without interrupting the progression of workpieces along the production line. Possible flaws in the inspected workpieces are imaged, and images of possible flaws are stored in a memory in a way that associates a stored image with the workpiece containing the possible flaw. Off-line, a stored image is retrieved from the memory before the workpiece with which the image is associated reaches a downstream sorting station. The retrieved image is displayed on a monitor for verifying, by visual inspection, whether the possible flaw in the workpiece with which the retrieved image is associated, is valid. Workpieces are diverted at the downstream sorting station in response to vertification of flaws.
