Abstract:
An apparatus and method for micropumping is disclosed. The apparatus (100) comprises a virtual or physical microchannel (106) and at least two hydrophobic electrode patches (104A-104G) on a surface (102) or two electrode patches disposed underneath a dielectric film proximate to the channel (106). Each of the electrode patches modifies a surface property between hydrophobic and hydrophilic states in response to an electrical potential applied between the liquid and the electrode, and the electrical potential is provided to digitize the liquid, drive the liquid segments, and mix different liquids.
Abstract:
A drop-on-demand liquid emission device, such as for example an ink jet printer, includes a member movable through a path for driving liquid from the device, wherein the speed at which the member moves is reduced over the time period that liquid is being expelled. During that time period, a portion of the liquid flows through a passage away from the nozzle orifice. According to a feature of the present invention, a variable flow restrictor increases the resistance to flow through the passage during the time period that liquid is being expelled; thereby tending to compensate for the reduction of the liquid-expulsion force over the time period. The result is a reduction of undesirable satellite droplets following a main drop.
Abstract:
A light source comprising a plurality of flash lamps emits flashes thereby flash-heating a semiconductor wafer held by a thermal diffuser and a hot plate. The current distance of irradiation between the thermal diffuser and the hot plate holding the semiconductor wafer and the light source is so adjusted as to attain predetermined intensity of irradiation. The distance of irradiation between the thermal diffuser and the hot plate and the light source can be changed or corrected by vertically moving the thermal diffuser and the hot plate. Thus provided is a thermal processing apparatus using the flash lamps, capable of readily controlling the intensity of irradiation.

The invention relates to an electrospray emitter (1null; 1null; 1nullnull), comprising an essentially tubular member (2; 5; 7) having an inlet end and an outlet end. There is provided a spray aperture (4) in the outlet end, having an inner diameter suitable for the generation of electrospray usable in mass spectrometry. At least a surface portion of the emitter comprises a conductive polymer composition that is stable in conditions prevailing during electrospray.
Abstract:
A process for producing a weather resistant coating film which can keep a gloss retention of 80% or more for 1,000 hours or more in an accelerated weathering test by a carbon sunshine weather-o-meter by preparing a weather resistant coating material comprising a binder and a curing agent as main constituents and coating an article to be coated with the coating material, followed by drying, which process comprises chemically bonding an ultraviolet absorptive compound having the maximum value of its light absorption spectrum in a wavelength region shorter than 380 nm and having a molecular extinction coefficient at the absorption maximum wavelength of 5,000 to 50,000 to either or both of the binder and the curing agent constituting the coating material, preparing a coating material with the above-mentioned bonding and the constitution of the coating material being designed such that when the coating material is coated on an article and dried, the concentration C (mol/L) of the residual group of the ultraviolet absorptive-compound in the dry coating film may satisfy the expression nulldCnull129nulllognullnull367 wherein null is the molecular extinction coefficient of the residual group of the above-mentioned compound in the dry film, d is the thickness (cm) of the dry coating film when in use and null is the time (hour) of exposure in the accelerated weathering test that shows a gloss retention of 80% or more which is determined according to the requirements of intended uses, and coating the coating material on the article, followed by drying, so that the thickness of the dry coated film may become the above-mentioned d, and a coating material which provides the film. Provided are a process for producing a coating film excellent in such weather resistances as gloss retainability, resistance to discoloration and resistance to cracking necessary for long-term outdoor uses, and a coating material which gives the film.
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a flow splitter that includes an outer fluid conduit for receiving an incoming fluid flow that is the bulk flow of effluent from a liquid chromatographic column, flowing at an input flow rate. The flow splitter further includes an inner fluid conduit coaxially mounted within the outer fluid conduit so that a portion of the incoming fluid is split off into the inner fluid conduit and flows into the input end thereof. The inner fluid conduit extends beyond the exterior of the outer fluid conduit to provide an output fluid flow having an output flow rate that is less than the input flow rate. The outer fluid conduit further includes a fluid outlet that provides an outlet for the portion of the incoming fluid that is not split by the inner fluid conduit. A restriction valve can be coupled to the fluid outlet to finely adjust the output flow rate. The input end of the inner fluid conduit is positioned so as to be substantially free of turbulence from the fluid outlet.
Abstract:
A rotary atomizer with external charging which can be used for applying conductive paints, in particular water-based paint, to a surface of a body to be coated. The rotary atomizer has a directing air ring at a high-voltage potential and an earthed spraying bell. To reduce the risk of discharges, it is proposed to connect the ring to an earth potential via a high-impedance resistance, so that the ring assumes a potential which lies between the high-voltage potential of electrodes for the external charging and the earth potential of the bell.
