Abstract: A method for fabricating an upright photovoltaic cell comprises growing one or more epitaxial layers on a substrate, thereby forming a diffused active junction on the substrate and one more additional active junctions above the diffused active junction. The method further comprises selectively etching an areal region of the one or more epitaxial layers, thereby forming a mesa on the substrate and exposing a substrate-contact region parallel to the areal region at a base of the mesa. The method further comprises depositing contact material onto the substrate-contact region, to form the first contact, and concertedly onto a mesa-contact region of the mesa, to form the second contact.

Abstract: Systems, apparatuses and methods may provide for a frangible sensor assembly that includes a circuit board having a retained section, a frangible portion, and a detachable section separated from the retained section by the frangible portion, a conductive element on the retained section that spans the frangible portion, and a sensor sub-assembly electrically coupled to the conductive element. The sensor sub-assembly monitors a continuity signal via the conductive element, detects a break of the frangible portion based on the continuity signal, and generates an alert notification in response to the break of the frangible portion.

Abstract: A thermal disinfecting tool for disinfecting surfaces bounding or located within a fixed volume of air is disclosed and includes a housing and a heater. The housing defines one or more inlets and one or more outlets. Air is drawn from the fixed volume of air through the one or more inlets and exits the housing through the one or more outlets. The heater is disposed within the housing downstream of the one or more inlets and upstream of the one or more outlets. The thermal disinfecting tool also includes one or more processors in electronic communication with the heater and a memory coupled to the one or more processors, where the memory stores a time to inactivation plot for a specific pathogen that indicates a deactivation time for the specific pathogen over a range of temperatures.

Abstract: A system includes a power-circulating transmission having a plurality of transmission components arranged in series to circulate motion along a continuous loop and a test article coupled to the power-circulating transmission. The system includes a clutch, a brake, a starting-torque motor, a running motor, and a running-torque motor. The brake selectively couples or decouples the transmission components such that the power-circulating transmission is in an engaged or disengaged power-circulating state. The brake selectively inhibits motion of one of the transmission components when the power-circulating transmission is in the disengaged power-circulating state. The starting-torque motor applies a static torque load to the power-circulating transmission. The running motor applies power to the power-circulating transmission to drive the motion along the continuous loop. The running-torque motor applies a dynamic torque load to the power-circulating transmission.

Abstract: Described herein are methods for the continuous preparation of 1,2-di(furan-2-yl)ethane-1,2-diol from furan-2-carbaldehyde. The methods can proceed chemically or electrochemically. In certain examples, the methods further comprise the application of a static mixer. The present methods produce 1,2-di(furan-2-yl)ethane-1,2-diol in greater yield, purity, chemoselectivity, and stereoselectivity than traditional batch methods.

Abstract: An aircraft cooling system comprises an evaporator, condenser, an accumulator, and a pump system. The evaporator is configured to cool a set of heat loads in an aircraft using a liquid. The liquid forms a vapor in response to cooling the set of heat loads. The condenser is configured to receive the vapor from the evaporator and cool the vapor in which cooling the vapor forms the liquid. The accumulator is configured to receive the liquid from the condenser and store the liquid. The pump system is configured to pump the liquid stored in the accumulator to the evaporator.
