Abstract: A vehicle, suspension system and method of dampening a force on the suspension system is disclosed. The suspension system includes a damper having a first damping element and a second damping element configured to rotate relative to each other in response to a force received at the suspension system. The second damping element induces an eddy current in the first damping element during relative rotation. A feature of one at least one of the first damping element and the second damping element provides a first electrical resistance to the eddy current during relative rotation in a first direction and a second electrical resistance to the eddy current during relative rotation in a second direction. The first electrical resistance generates a first damping force and the second electrical resistance generates a second damping force.

Abstract: A method of controlling an electric motor of a vehicle includes monitoring torque command signals from a vehicle system to the electric motor, each torque command signal configured to cause the electric motor to output a commanded torque, and monitoring a speed of the vehicle and an output torque of the electric motor, the output torque responsive to a drive signal generated based on the torque command signals. The method also includes, based on the output torque and the vehicle speed indicating a low motor efficiency condition, modulating the drive signal between a first torque value and a second torque value that is less than the first torque value, the first torque value greater than the commanded torque and selected to increase an efficiency of the electric motor.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing a permanent magnet for a rotor of an axial flux electric machine is described herein. The method includes forming multiple permanent magnet (PM) pieces to have the same shape. Each of the PM pieces has an inner radial surface, an outer radial surface, and a pair of side surfaces extending between the inner and outer radial surfaces. The method further includes attaching at least one of the side surfaces of each of the PM pieces to one of the side surfaces of another one of the PM pieces to form partitions configured to extend in a radial direction of the rotor.

Abstract: An electric machine includes a housing, a rotor rotatably mounted to the housing, and a stator mounted to the housing about the rotor. The stator includes a stator body formed from a plurality of laminations. The plurality of laminations include an outer annular surface defining a radius, an inner annular surface spaced from the rotor, and a plurality of radially inwardly extending stator teeth spaced one from another by plurality of gaps. Each of the plurality of gaps extend along the radius and include an opening exposed at the inner annular surface. The opening has a first side portion and a second side portion each extending at an angle relative to the radius.

Abstract: Presented are segmented hairpin bar conductors for electric machines, methods for making/using such segmented bar conductors, electromagnetic motors using such segmented bar conductors, and vehicles equipped with an induction motor generator unit using segmented hairpin bar conductors. An electric machine includes a stator that defines multiple circumferentially spaced, radially elongated stator slots. A rotor is located adjacent and movable with respect to the stator. One or more permanent magnets are mounted to the rotor, and one or more U-shaped hairpin windings are mounted to the stator in juxtaposed spaced relation to the magnet(s). Each hairpin winding is formed from an array of collimated, electrically conductive wires that are bundled together into a unitary bar conductor. The segmented hairpin winding has a pair of hairpin legs, each of which adjoins and projects from a respective end of a hairpin crown. Each hairpin leg inserts into a respective one the stator slots.

Abstract: A method for constructing a lamination for a rotary electric machine includes forming an annular lamination from a ferrous core material having a first relative magnetic permeability. The lamination defines through-openings, e.g., for permanent magnets or conductors. Peripheral bridges of the core material extend between the through-openings and an outer or inner diameter surface of the lamination. The method includes diffusing an alloy material having a second relative magnetic permeability into the bridges to form austenitic bridges, with the second relative magnetic permeability being less than the first relative magnetic permeability. A rotary electric machine includes a stator and rotor. A vehicle includes a rotary electric machine connected to the battery pack and to road wheels, and having a rotor and/or a stator constructed in accordance with the method.

Abstract: A method of controlling fast charging of at least one battery pack within a high voltage electrical propulsion system includes identifying an operating condition, wherein the operating condition is one of charging mode and propulsion mode, and, when the electrical system is in charging mode, initiating charging of the at least one battery pack, terminating charging of the at least one battery pack and connecting the at least one battery pack to power components of the electrical propulsion system when there is a request to terminate charging of the at least one battery pack, and terminating charging of the at least one battery pack and connecting the at least one battery pack to power components of the electrical propulsion system when there is no request to terminate charging of the at least one battery pack and the charging of the at least one battery pack is complete.
