Abstract: A light modulator of to this embodiment enables high-speed modulation to an SLM using a liquid crystal. The light modulator comprises refractive index regions arranged in a first direction on a reference plane, a region surrounding each refractive index regions and having a refractive index lower than that of each refractive index region, a first conductive film, and a second conductive film. The second conductive film is provided on any one of the pair of side surfaces so as not to overlap with the first conductive film in at least one refractive index region selected from the refractive index regions and belonging to a second group.

Abstract: A depth camera assembly (DCA) for depth sensing of a local area. The DCA includes a transmitter, a receiver, and a controller. The transmitter illuminates a local area with outgoing light in accordance with emission instructions. The transmitter includes a fine steering element and a coarse steering element. The fine steering element deflects one or more optical beams at a first deflection angle to generate one or more first order deflected scanning beams. The coarse steering element deflects the one or more first order deflected scanning beams at a second deflection angle to generate the outgoing light projected into the local area. The receiver captures one or more images of the local area including portions of the outgoing light reflected from the local area. The controller determines depth information for one or more objects in the local area based in part on the captured one or more images.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a display panel that includes a display portion including pixels and a non-display portion including an opening, an illumination device, and a color separation element provided between the display panel and the illumination device. The color separation element includes a first element overlapping the pixel and a second element overlapping the opening, the first element separates illumination light from the illumination device into light of a plurality of colors and irradiates the pixel with the light, and the second element separates illumination light from the illumination device into light of a plurality of colors and irradiates the opening with the light.

Abstract: Dual-direction collimation and a dual surface collimator provide dual-direction collimated light at a non-zero propagation angle. The dual surface collimator includes an entrance surface and a reflector surface each having a curved shape. The entrance surface is configured to refract incident light and the reflector surface is configured to reflect the refracted light back toward the entrance surface. The entrance surface is further configured to re-reflect the reflected light by total internal reflection toward an output aperture. Curved shapes and relative orientation of the entrance and reflector surfaces, in combination, are configured to convert the incident light into dual-direction collimated light having the non-zero propagation angle. A three-dimensional (3D) display includes the dual surface collimator, a plate light guide and an array of multibeam diffraction gratings to provide a plurality of light beams corresponding to different 3D view of the display.
