A polarization light splitting film having a light receiving side and a light transmitting side. The polarization light splitting film includes an optical rotation selection layer at the light receiving side for reflecting one of right and left circularly polarized components of a light beam that is incident on the light receiving side and for transmitting the other one of the right and left circular polarization components of the light beam, and a quarter-wave layer laminated over the optical rotation selection layer at the light transmitting side.
Abstract:
The invention provides a thin reflective plate having cholesteric liquid crystal that can prevent or reduce a decrease of reflection efficiency. A reflective plate includes a cholesteric liquid crystal layer, and the cholesteric liquid crystal layer includes a plurality of regions in which the helical axes of the cholesteric liquid crystal are aligned in different directions in the plane of a substrate, and therefore, the regions can reflect color light components having different wavelengths. Consequently, the cholesteric liquid crystal layer can reflect light formed of light components of different colors (for example, white light) as a whole. When the reflective plate is applied to a reflective liquid crystal display device or the like, it is possible to appropriately reflect white light for display.
Abstract:
The liquid crystal switchable color filter switches between three color bands and is preferably used for time-sequential color devices, as for example projection devices, direct view displays and video cameras. The color filter employs circularly polarizing selective reflection bands of at least four cholesteric filters (89, 91, 93, 95) together with three liquid crystal switches (81, 83, 85) and related retarder layers. Between the first and the second as well as between the third and the fourth cholesteric filter an additional half-wave plate (111, 113) is provided, which makes it possible to use cholesteric filters having all the same handedness. Furthermore, for the blocking state of a color band the optic axis of the corresponding liquid crystal switch is parallel or perpendicular to the polarization direction. This concept simplifies production and still exhibits excellent properties for the color switch. Moreover, it advantageously allows overlapping color transmission bands thus improving the light efficiency.

Abstract:
To provide a reflector using cholesteric liquid crystals arranged in a structure for reducing thickness, and a transflective liquid crystal display device including the reflector.[Solving Means] In a transflective layer 18, pitch areas 18R, 18G, and 18B are formed within a plane of one dot, and color filters 30R, 30G, and 30B of respective colors are formed in respective dots in order to form one pixel. Therefore, the transflective layer 18 can be formed thin, and can reflect white light by a mixture of the colors of light reflected by the respective pitch areas 18R, 18G, and 18B in one dot. In addition, the pitch areas 18R, 18G, and 18B can pass the complementary colors of the colors corresponding to the pitch areas 18R, 18G, and 18B, so that, even by color mixture, white light can be transmitted in one dot. Therefore, it is possible to perform a color displaying operation for each pixel through a color filter layer 30 based on reflected light and transmitted light close to these white lights.

The present invention provides an inexpensive retardation optical element having the function of reflecting ultraviolet light, capable of decreasing the amount of ultraviolet light that enters a liquid crystal cell, and a liquid crystal display comprising such a retardation optical element. A retardation optical element having the function of reflecting ultraviolet light 10 comprises a retardation layer 12 having a cholesteric liquid crystalline molecular structure in planar orientation. The retardation layer 12 is made so that at least part of its selective reflection wave range for light, which the retardation layer 12 selectively reflects, due to its liquid crystalline molecular structure, is included in an ultraviolet region of 100 to 400 nm and that the maximum reflectance for light in this ultraviolet region is 30% or more.

Abstract:
A liquid crystal switchable color filter switches between three color bands and is preferably used for time-sequential devices, such as projection devices, direct view displays and video cameras. The color filter may employ circularly polarizing selective reflection bands of at least four cholesteric filters together with three liquid crystal switches and related retarder layers. In one embodiment, the handedness of the second cholesteric is equal to the handedness of the third cholesteric filter and opposite to the handedness of the first and fourth cholesteric filter and, for the blocking state of a color band, the optic axis of the corresponding liquid crystal switch is parallel or perpendicular to the polarization direction. This concept leads to improved, excellent color saturation and requires less stringent production tolerances than in the prior art. Moreover, it advantageously allows overlapping color transmission bands thus improving the light efficiency.
