Abstract: A drive controller for a motor of a compressor includes a drive circuit that applies voltages to windings of the motor. The drive controller includes a speed control module that controls the drive circuit to rotate the motor at a requested speed. The drive controller includes a speed determination module that generates the requested speed. The drive controller includes a defrost module that enables a defrost mode in response to a defrost command. While the defrost mode is enabled, the defrost module causes the speed determination module to (i) ramp the requested speed down from a speed demand to a defrost speed and (ii) maintain the requested speed at the defrost speed for a predetermined period of time.

Abstract: A compressor may include a non-orbiting scroll, an orbiting scroll, a drive shaft, a bearing housing and an annular seal. The non-orbiting scroll includes a first spiral wrap. The orbiting scroll includes an end plate having a second spiral wrap ending from a first side of the end plate and an annular hub extending from a second side of the end plate. The first and second spiral wraps cooperate to compress working fluid from a suction pressure to a discharge pressure. The drive shaft includes a crankpin received in the hub and drives the orbiting scroll. The bearing housing rotatably supports the drive shaft and may define a biasing chamber containing working fluid biasing the orbiting scroll toward the non-orbiting scroll in an axial direction. The annular seal may engage a diametrical surface of the hub and engage the bearing housing, thereby defining the biasing chamber.

Abstract: A compressor may include first and second scrolls, a hub plate and a valve. The first scroll may include an end plate defining first and second sides, a primary discharge passage extending therethrough, and a secondary discharge passage extending therethrough and located radially outward from the primary discharge passage. The hub plate may be mounted to the first scroll and may include first and second opposite sides and a hub discharge passage in fluid communication with the primary discharge passage. The first side of the hub plate may face the second side of the end plate and may include a valve guide extending axially toward the end plate adjacent the hub discharge passage. The valve member may be secured on the valve guide for axial movement between open and closed positions to respectively allow and restrict fluid communication between the secondary discharge passage and the hub discharge passage.

Abstract: A system and method for a compressor includes a compressor connected to a condenser, a discharge line temperature sensor that outputs a discharge line temperature signal corresponding to a discharge line temperature of refrigerant leaving the compressor, and a control module connected to the discharge line temperature sensor. The control module determines a saturated condenser temperature, calculates a discharge superheat temperature based on the saturated condenser temperature and the discharge line temperature, and monitors a flood back condition of the compressor by comparing the discharge superheat temperature with a predetermined threshold. The control module increases a speed of the compressor when the discharge superheat temperature is less than or equal to the predetermined threshold.

Abstract: A compressor may include a shell containing a motor, a compression mechanism and a lubricant sump. The compressor may also include first and second temperature sensors, and a control module. The first temperature sensor may be at least partially disposed within the lubricant sump and may measure a first temperature of a lubricant at a first position. The second temperature sensor may be at least partially disposed within the lubricant sump and may measure a second temperature of the lubricant at a second position that is vertically higher than the first position. The control module is in communication with the first and second temperature sensors. The control module may determine a first difference between the first temperature and the second temperature. The control module may determine whether a liquid level of the lubricant in the lubricant sump is below a predetermined level based on the first difference.

The second working fluid flow path may be disposed downstream of the heat exchanger and may fluidly connect the heat exchanger with the compressor. The second working fluid flow path may provide compressed working fluid to the compression mechanism and to the motor.

Abstract: A converter circuit is provided and includes: a first EMI filter connected to AC lines and includes one or more across-the-line capacitors; a charging circuit that receives power from the first EMI filter and limits an amount of current passing from the first EMI filter to a DC bus; and a PFC circuit of a compressor drive that provides PFC between an output of the charging circuit and a generated first DC voltage. The PFC circuit includes: a rectification circuit that rectifies the power from the AC lines or a charging circuit output; and a second EMI filter connected downstream from the rectification circuit and including a DC bus rated capacitor. The second EMI filter outputs a filtered DC signal based on a rectification circuit output. The PFC circuit, based on the second EMI filter output, outputs the first DC voltage to the DC bus to power the compressor drive.
