Abstract:
The present invention provides novel fluorinated acrylamide silane monomers which are useful as adhesion promoting agents in optical fiber cladding compositions. Polymerization of the novel monomers, optionally in the presence compatible ethylenically-unsaturated monomers, provides homopolymers and copolymers which are useful as non-wetting agents.
Abstract:
Organic groups covalently bound to a polymer backbone provide second or third order nonlinear susceptibilities to the polymer. In another aspect, a method is disclosed for providing the novel polymers of the invention. Polymers of the invention can be directionally oriented to provide useful optically nonlinear media for use in nonlinear optical devices such as optical switches or light modulation devices.
Abstract:
The present invention provides novel silyl 2-amidoacetates and silyl 3-amidopropionates which are the reaction products of azlactone and silanol reactants. The novel products result from nucleophilic addition of a soluble or insoluble, low or high molecular weight reactant containing one or more silanol groups and a soluble or insoluble, low or high molecular weight reactant containing one or more azlactone groups. The reaction products provide for high adhesion between the siliceous and azlactone reactants, as would be useful as protective coatings particularly on silicon-containing materials. It has been recognized in the present invention that silyl 2-amidoacetates and silyl 3-amidopropionates are useful linkages between silanol and azlactone derived materials.

Abstract:
A composition of matter comprising an acrylamido-acyl or methacrylamido-acyl oligomer derived from at least one nucleophilic oligomer having at least one amino-, hydroxyl-, or thiol-substituted polyoxyalkylene, polyalkyleneimine, polyester, polyolefin, polyacrylate, or polysiloxane oligomer, said nucleophilic oliogmer having a molecular weight in the range of 200 to 20,000 is disclosed. Also disclosed are free radically polymerizable monomer-containing compositions containing said oligomers as well as acrylamido- and methacrylamido-acylated polymers which are the thermal or photocured products of said oligomers. In addition, a process is disclosed for providing said acrylamido- and methacrylamido-acylated oligomers which are useful, for example, in coatings, films, printing inks, adhesives, and saturants.
Abstract:
A poly(triazolinethione) is prepared by a process comprising the steps:(a) providing a poly(acylthiosemicarbazide),(b) cyclodehydrating the poly(acylthiosemicarbazide) by subjecting it to an elevated temperature in the presence of an aqueous alkaline solution to form a polyanion of a poly(triazolinethione),(c) treating the polyanion of the poly(triazolinethione) with aqueous acid solution to provide the poly(triazolinethione), and(d) isolating the resulting poly(triazolinethione).
Abstract:
A novel class of heterocyclic polymers and copolymers containing the 2-imidazolin-5-one ring structure is described. These polymers are prepared by reaction of bisazlactones and diamines, with or without suitable condensation monomers; the resultant polyamides are then thermally cyclodehydrated in the presence of a catalyst to produce the imidazolinone-containing polymers. Many of the poly(imidazolinones) are water soluble and therefore find utility in various aspects of water treatment, or in paper or fabric sizing.
Abstract:
Azlactone-functional compounds, which are liquid above 20.degree. C., and their method of preparation from alkenyl azlactones and nucleophilic group-substituted compounds are disclosed. The azlactone-functional compounds of the invention cure in the presence of nucleophilic chain-extending or crosslinking agents to form linear or crosslinked polyamide resin systems.
