    Abstract: An electret formed by micro-machining technology on a support surface, including a self-powered electret sound transducer, preferably in the form of a microphone, formed by micro-machining technology. Each microphone is manufactured as a two-piece unit, comprising a microphone membrane unit and a microphone back plate, at least one of which includes an electret formed by micro-machining technology. When juxtaposed, the two units form a microphone that can produce a signal without the need for external biasing, thereby reducing system volume and complexity. The electret material used is a thin film of spin-on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). An electron gun preferably is used for charge implantation. The electret has a saturated charged density in the range of about 2null10null5 C/m2 to about 8null10null4 C/m2. Thermal annealing is used to stabilize the implanted charge. An open circuit sensitivity of about 0.5 mV/Pa has been achieved for a hybrid microphone package.

    Abstract: Methods and systems for the electrochemical epoxidation of alkenes to generate an epoxide are described herein. Said methods and systems comprise: contacting an anode comprising an oxygen atom transfer electrocatalyst with an alkene in the presence of an electrolyte comprising water; applying a voltage to the anode and a cathode to generate the epoxide; wherein the oxygen atom transfer electrocatalyst comprises an at least partially oxidized palladium-platinum alloy characterized by the formula FX1: PdyPtzOx; wherein y is greater than 0 and less than 1; z is greater than 0 and less than 1; wherein the sum of y and z is equal to 1; and x is selected from the range of 0 to 2. The methods and systems disclosed herein comprise a significant advancement in the electrocatalytic epoxidation of alkenes in aqueous and mixed electrolytes using water as the oxygen atom transfer source.

    Abstract: An intraocular lens (IOL) has a small, central lens suspended within a pliable housing and, when the housing is filled with liquid, is coaxially aligned with a second small lens embedded in the wall of the housing. The suspension is on a dome- or other-shaped webbing attached to an inner circumference of the wall. When filled with liquid, forces squeezing or pulling the equator of the housing, as with ciliary muscles in the eye, adjust a distance between the lenses in order to adjust focus. Optional haptics may project from points on or above and below the equator. A recess in the posterior hemisphere of the housing can keep cell growth away from an optical axis of the lens system. A third small lens can be embedded in an opposite wall of the housing and coaxially aligned with the other lenses to form a three-lens, ultra-zoom system.

    Abstract: A device includes, in part, an antenna adapted to receive an RF signal that includes modulated data, a splitter/coupler adapted to split the received RF signal, a receiver adapted to demodulate the data from a first portion of the RF signal, and a power recovery unit adapted to convert to a DC power a second portion of the RF signal. The splitter/coupler is optionally adjustable to split the RF signal in accordance with a value that may be representative of a number of factors, such as the target data rate, the DC power requirement of the device, and the like. The device optionally includes a switch and/or a power combiner adapted to deliver all the received RF power to the receiver depending on any number of operation conditions of the device or the device's distance from an RF transmitting device.
