    Abstract: An apparatus includes a component having a first surface, a first waveguide for directing electromagnetic radiation to a focal point adjacent to the first surface, a storage medium positioned adjacent to the first surface, a detector for detecting electromagnetic radiation reflected from the storage medium, and a structure positioned adjacent to the focal point for collecting the reflected electromagnetic radiation and for transmitting the reflected electromagnetic radiation toward the detector, wherein the structure comprises a second waveguide including a first cladding layer positioned adjacent to a first side of the first waveguide and having a first end positioned adjacent to the first surface and a second cladding layer positioned adjacent to a second side of the first waveguide and having a first end positioned adjacent to the air bearing surface.

    Abstract: A data writing system includes an array of cells for storing data and a write transducer that moves over a selected cell in the array of cells. The write transducer includes a writer producing a write magnetic field that intersects the selected cell. The write transducer also includes a plasmon resonator that is adjacent the writer. The plasmon resonator is shaped to receive lower power density radiation and to provide plasmon radiation at a higher power density to an optical spot intersecting with the selected cell. The plasmon radiation heats the selected cell above a write temperature.

    Abstract: A data writing system includes an array of cells for storing data and a write transducer that moves over a selected cell in the array of cells.     Abstract: The invention relates to improvements in the production of alcohols by microbial fermentation, particularly to production of alcohols by microbial fermentation of a substrate comprising CO.
