Abstract: A method of making a formed ceramic abrasive particle is presented that includes molding a dispersion of a ceramic abrasive particle precursor mixture. The method also includes drying the molded dispersion to form a ceramic abrasive particle particle precursor. The method also includes calcining the ceramic abrasive particle precursor. The method also includes sintering the ceramic abrasive particle precursor to form the formed ceramic abrasive particle. The method also includes impregnating the ceramic abrasive particle precusor with a mixture. The mixture includes one or more of a first group consisting of: an oxide of yttrium, praseodymium, samarium, ytterbium, neodymium, lanthanum, gadolinium, dysprosium, and erbium or one or more of a second group consisting of: oxide of iron, magnesium, zinc, silicon, cobalt, nickel, zirconium, hafnium, chromium, cerium, titanium. Impregnating the ceramic abrasive particle precursor occurs after drying, calcining or sintering.

Abstract: Various embodiments disclosed relate to an abrasive article (10). The abrasive article (10 includes a backing (12) defining a major surface. The abrasive article (10) includes an abrasive layer including a plurality of tetrahedral abrasive particles (16) attached to the backing (12). The tetrahedral abrasive particles (16) include four faces joined by six edges terminating at four vertices (40, 42, 44, 46). Each one of the four faces contacts three of the four faces, and a major portion of the tetrahedral abrasive particles (16) have at least one of the vertices (40, 42, 44, 46) oriented in substantially a same direction.

Abstract: An abrasive article comprising an attachment layer and an abrasive layer. The attachment layer comprises a porous backing having a first major surface, an opposed second major surface, and a first plurality of voids extending from the first major surface to the second major surface. The abrasive layer has a third major surface and an opposed fourth major surface and comprises a cured composition, abrasive particles at least partially embedded in the cured composition, and a second plurality of voids extending from the third major surface to the fourth major surface. The first major surface of the attachment layer is adjacent the third major surface of the abrasive layer, and the pattern of the second plurality of voids is independent of the pattern of the first plurality of voids.
