Abstract: Articles subject to ice formation during normal use are described. The article comprises a repellent surface such that the receding contact angle of the surface with water ranges from 90 degrees to 135 degrees. The repellent surface comprises a fluoro chemical material, typically in combination with a non-fluorinated organic polymeric binder. The fluorochemical material is preferably a compound having the formula: (Rf-L-P)nA Rf is a fluorinated group; L is independently an organic divalent linking group; P is a catenary, divalent heteroatom-containing carbonyl moiety, such as —C(0)0-; A is hydrocarbon moiety; and n typically ranges from 1 to 3. Also described are methods of making an article comprising providing an article subject to ice formation during normal use and providing a liquid repellent surface, as described herein, on at least a portion of the article.

Abstract: A heating tape comprises an insulated heating element that includes a heating element layer comprising a polymer composite having conductive particles and at least one set of conductive electrodes at least partially embedded in the polymer composite and extending along at least a substantial portion of the length of the heating tape. A heating tape system for a pipe or other surface, further includes a power ramp controller having a solid state relay component to regulate an in-rush of current to the heating element. The heating tape system also includes a connector having multiple contact points.

Abstract: The tape includes a backing and a pressure-sensitive adhesive applied from an aqueous dispersion on the backing. The pressure-sensitive adhesive includes an at least partially crosslinked elastomer, a tackifying resin, and sulfur. A process for making the tape includes applying an aqueous dispersion of an elastomer, the tackifying resin, and the sulfur to the backing and drying the aqueous dispersion to provide the pressure-sensitive adhesive on the backing. A process of using the tape includes applying the tape to a surface and exposing the surface to a temperature of at least 150° C.

Abstract: Particles of encapsulated first epoxy resin (microcapsules) comprise: a) a core of first epoxy resin, within b) a shell comprising an organic polymer, and c) a layer of oil-in-water Pickering emulsifier particles borne on an outer surface of the shell. These particles may be used in liquid adhesive compositions, solid adhesive compositions such as tapes, or in other applications. In various embodiments, the oil-in-water Pickering emulsifier particles comprise materials selected from the group consisting of silica, fumed silica, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate, clay, carbon black, iron oxide, carbon nanotubes, latex, block copolymer micelles, polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), any of the preceding materials which additionally are surface-modified, and combinations thereof. Particles of encapsulated epoxy resin may have an average diameter of 0.1-1000 micrometers, or in some embodiments 30-300 micrometers. The oil-in-water Pickering emulsifier particles may have an average diameter of 5-1000 nanometers, 5-100 nanometers, or in some embodiments 5-50 nanometers.

Abstract: Curable pressure sensitive adhesive tapes comprise: a) a pressure sensitive adhesive polymer; b) particles of encapsulated first epoxy resin (microcapsules) mixed into the pressure sensitive adhesive polymer; and c) a first epoxy curative. In some embodiments, the first epoxy curative is blended into the pressure sensitive adhesive. In other embodiments, the first epoxy curative is the pressure sensitive adhesive polymer. In some embodiments, the first epoxy curative may be an adduct of a second epoxy curative and a second epoxy resin in a ratio of at least 2:1 second epoxy curative to second epoxy resin. The particles of encapsulated first epoxy resin comprise a core of first epoxy resin within a shell comprising an organic polymer, and optionally a layer of oil-in-water Pickering emulsifier particles borne on a surface of the shells. Typically, the tape may be cured to form a structural bond between adherends.
