Abstract: An apparatus includes a housing having an external surface configured to be placed on a non-magnetic material over-laying a first device comprising a first ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic material. The apparatus further includes a second ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic material and/or an electromagnet within the housing. The second ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic material and/or the electromagnet is configured to generate an attractive magnetic force with the first device. The apparatus is configured to controllably adjust an attractive magnetic force between the first device and the second ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic material and/or the electromagnet along a longitudinal axis substantially perpendicular to the surface.

Abstract: Medical devices allow for the complete removal of a portion of an implantable component that contains a magnet. Such structure allows a recipient to undergo MRI procedures without interference from the implanted magnet. The magnet can also be contained within a larger, non-magnetic chassis that acts as an enlarged lever arm having a greater torque resistance against the generated magnetic forces.

Abstract: Presented herein are techniques for selectively disconnecting an implantable rechargeable battery of an implantable component configured to be implanted in a recipient. The implantable rechargeable battery can be temporarily disconnected to extend the calendar life of the implantable rechargeable battery and/or the implantable rechargeable battery can be permanently disconnected. While the implantable rechargeable battery is disconnected (either temporarily or permanently), the implantable component is configured to continue operation using only power signals (power) received from an external device.

Abstract: An apparatus includes at least one housing configured to be implanted on or within a recipients body. The apparatus further includes first circuitry configured to wirelessly receive power from a device external to the recipients body, second circuitry configured to provide stimulation signals to a portion of the recipients body, and at least one power storage device having a discharged state in which the at least one power storage device is discharged to a voltage below a minimum operating voltage of the at least one power storage device. The apparatus further includes third circuitry configured to, while the at least one power storage device is in the discharged state, controllably distribute the power simultaneously to both the second circuitry and the at least one power storage device.

Abstract: Aspects of the present invention are generally directed to taking measurements in a hearing prosthesis. In an embodiment, a power circuit, which may be a switched mode power circuit, is shut down during performance of the measurements to reduce interference. Then, power capacitively stored by the power circuit is used to power the hearing prosthesis during performance of the measurements. In an embodiment, the power circuit increases its voltage just prior to performance of the measurements. This serves to increase the amount of energy capacitively stored by the power circuit and thus extends the period of time during which the measurements may be taken while the power circuit is shut off.
