    Abstract: A method and apparatus used to transmit and receive weighted data transmissions over a plurality of antennas using a plurality of different pilot signals. Different pilot signals are produced and a different pilot signal of the plurality of pilot signals is transmitted on each of a plurality of antennas. Each of the pilot signals is derived from a pseudo noise (PN) sequence and a bit sequence of the PN sequence for each of the pilot signals is different. A plurality of data streams are produced in which each of the data streams has data bits combined with bits of a PN sequence. The data streams are weighted in response to weight information received from a receiving device and the plurality of weighted data streams are transmitted using the plurality of antennas.

    Abstract: The transmission and decoding of resource blocks (RBs) transmitted via a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna having a plurality of transmit antennas is disclosed. Each RB includes a plurality of resource elements (REs). Each RE is reserved for one of a common reference signal (CRS) associated with one of the transmit antennas, a dedicated reference signal (DRS) including a single beamformed or precoded pilot, a DRS including a composite beamformed or precoded pilot, and a data symbol. Each RB may include a “control type” data symbol that indicates a DRS mode associated with the RB. In one DRS mode, each DRS includes a single beamformed or precoded pilot. In another DRS mode, each DRS includes a composite beamformed or precoded pilot. In yet another DRS mode, single beamformed or precoded pilots, and composite beamformed or precoded pilots, may coexist and be transmitted simultaneously within the same RBs or in different RBs.

    Abstract: A method for determining the validity of a most significant path in a wireless communication system wherein data is transmitted in frame units in a multipath environment begins by accumulating a correlated data sequence N times, each time at a frame offset apart from the previous time. A preliminary noise estimate (PNE) is calculated as an average of the accumulated data values. A preliminary noise threshold (PNT) is calculated according to the equation C1×PNE. A final noise estimate (FNE) is calculated as the average of accumulated data values below the PNT. A final noise threshold (FNT) is calculated according to the equation C2×FNE. The validity of the most significant path is determined if the most significant path value is greater than the FNT.
