Abstract: An accurate position sensor is presented. The sensor operates over 360-degree motion angular motion and includes a coil structure formed on a substrate and a target mounted to be angularly moved over the coil structure, the target being formed of a conducting material in a shape of a spiral of Archimedes. The coil structure includes coils with an arc sufficient to operate over a 360 degree motion of the target, for example between 120 degrees and 360 degrees. Some embodiments include coils with a 180 degree arc. A method of operating the position sensor includes rotating a target formed of a conducting material in a shape of a spiral of Archimedes over a coil structure and providing a linearized and calibrated response indicating the angular position of the target relative to the coil structure.

Abstract: In some embodiments, a coil design system is provided. In particular, a method of providing an optimized position locating sensor coil design in presented. The method includes receiving a coil design; simulating position determination with the coil design to form a simulated performance; comparing the simulated response with the specification to provide a comparison; and modifying the coil design based on a comparison between the simulated performance and a performance specification to arrive at an updated coil design.

Abstract: In some embodiments, a position sensor calibration and linearization system for position sensors is provided. A method of calibrating and linearization of a position sensor includes reading Spatial Angle data from a position sensor at a set of positions of a target swept over receive coils in the position sensor; calculating calibration parameters from the Spatial Angle data; determining an initial position values from the Spatial Angle data and the calibration parameters; determining linearization parameters from the initial position values; and writing the calibration parameters and the linearization parameters into the position sensor.

Abstract: In some embodiments, optimizing a coil design is provided. In particular, a method of providing an optimized position locating sensor coil design includes receiving a coil design, the coil design including geometric positions of a transmit coil and geometric positions of receive coils; linearizing one or more of the receive coils; and offset compensating the one or more of the receive coils. The linearization determines a geometric correction array for adjusting the geometric position of one of the receive coils. The offset correction includes determining a geometric shift to shift the geometric position of the one of the receive coils.
