Abstract:
An external mix air assisted spray nozzle assembly having a nozzle body, and an air cap for a directing pressurized air streams on a discharging liquid stream external to the liquid discharge orifice of the nozzle assembly for atomizing and forming the liquid into the desired spray pattern. The air cap includes an upstream internal air chamber, an external, downstream liquid discharge and mixing chamber, and a central opening coaxial with the liquid discharge orifice communicating between the upstream and downstream chambers. The air cap further includes a plurality of angled pressurized air discharge passages which communicate with an annular plenum of the air chamber disposed in surrounding relation to the central opening for enabling substantially uniform particle breakdown and distribution at lower air pressures than heretofore possible.

A gun-like spray device having a spray nozzle assembly at the discharge end and a reciprocatably movable valve needle for controlling the liquid flow through the discharge nozzle assembly. The nozzle assembly includes an orifice member which defines a liquid discharge orifice and a rigid valve seat for centering and precisely locating the valve needle in a closed position. An annular resilient sealing member is secured within the orifice member for engaging and creating a liquid seal about the valve needle separate and apart from the rigid seat when the valve needle is in a closed position. The spray nozzle assembly may be used with spray devices having different sized valve needles and includes a first rigid valve seat downstream of the resilient sealing member for receiving a relatively small diameter valve needle and a second rigid valve seat upstream of the resilient sealing member for receiving a relatively large diameter valve needle.

An air assisted spray nozzle assembly having an air cap effective for generating wide, flat spray patterns with improved liquid particle breakdown, utilizing relatively low air flow rates and pressures. The air cap includes a pair of longitudinally extending air passageways on opposite sides of a central liquid flow stream discharge orifice. The air flow passages each have a discharge orifice defined by a respective transverse deflector flange and a closely spaced inwardly tapered deflector surface which cooperate to deflect and guide pressurized air streams inwardly toward the discharging liquid flow stream for atomizing the liquid and for directing it into a well defined spray pattern.

An air assisted spray nozzle assembly is provided. The spray nozzle including a nozzle body having a liquid inlet passage and a gas inlet passage. The air cap is disposed at a downstream end of the nozzle body and includes an outer body member having an inner bore extending from an open upstream end thereof. A fluid directing insert is inserted in the inner bore of the outer body member. The fluid directing insert has a fluid directing passage extending therethrough which communicates with the liquid inlet passage in the nozzle body. An impingement element is also inserted into the inner bore of the outer body member downstream from the fluid directing insert. The impingement element defines an impingement surface spaced from and opposing the fluid directing passage for deflecting a stream of liquid impinging thereon in a radially outward direction. The outer body of the air cap also includes a plurality of longitudinally extending discharge passages arranged in surrounding relation to and extending downstream from the impingement surface. Each discharge passage has a discharge orifice therein for directing fluid in an inward flow path such that the flow paths produced by the respective discharge orifices impinge on one another and atomize the liquid.

A spray nozzle assembly having a spray tip formed with an elongated, cylindrical chamber communicating with the liquid supply and being formed with a cross-slot which intersects the chamber at a location intermediate the ends thereof for defining a discharge orifice, a deflection surface on a downstream side of the discharge orifice for directing liquid in a direction transverse to the axis of the chamber, and a pocket extending downstream of the deflector surface. In one embodiment, the spray tip has a preorifice substantially smaller in diameter than the chamber adjacent an upstream end thereof, in another embodiment, the chamber is disposed with its axis at an angle to the vertical and the cross-slot extends upwardly in substantially vertical relation for defining a vertical deflection surface, and in still another embodiment the spray tip has a wear resistant metal insert.

A spray nozzle assembly having a spray tip formed with an elongated, axially extending cylindrical chamber communicating with the liquid supply and being formed with a cross slot which intersects the chamber at a location intermediate the ends thereof for defining a discharge orifice, a deflection surface on a downstream side of the discharge orifice for directing liquid in a direction transversed to the axis of the chamber, and a pocket extending downstream of the deflector surface a distance significantly greater than the diameter of the chamber. In one embodiment, the spray tip has a pre-orifice of about one half the diameter of the chamber adjacent an upstream in thereof, in another embodiement, the chamber is disposed with it axis at an angle to the vertical and the cross slot extends upwardly in substantially vertical relation for defining a vertical deflection surface, and in still another embodiment the cross slot is formed with a round that extends beyond the axis of the chamber substantially to the perimeter thereof and has a radius of about twice the diameter of the chamber.

A pressurized air assisted liquid spray nozzle assembly having a liquid spray nozzle having a downstream discharge orifice for discharging a solid stream of liquid, an air guide mounted in surrounding relation to a downstream end of said liquid spray nozzle, and an outer nozzle body disposed in surrounding relation to said air guide.The air guide defines a first plurality of air passages for directing pressurized atomizing air transversely to liquid discharging from said liquid spray nozzle for atomizing the discharging liquid and a second plurality of air passages for directing shaping air tangentially to liquid discharging from said liquid spray nozzle for shaping the atomized liquid particles into a predetermined conical spray pattern.

A liquid adhesive dispensing system operable for more uniformly applying liquid adhesive foam onto moving substrates, notwithstanding changes in line speed, adhesive liquid flow rates, or foaming/atomizing air pressures. The illustrated liquid adhesive system includes a header having a plurality of air atomizing spray guns; the spray guns each having a respective variable speed positive displacement pump for directing a metered quantity of liquid adhesive from a liquid adhesive supply to the respective spray gun; and a control for controlling the operating speed of the positive displacement pumps in relation to the speed of the moving substrate and the foaming/atomizing air pressure to the spray guns in relation to the operating speed of the positive displacement pumps. The control further is operable for monitoring pressures across the positive displacement pumps for insuring the accurate direction of metered quantities of liquid to the spray guns. The spray guns are adapted for enhanced liquid adhesive foaming and atomization, and the header is convertible into a closed housing structure effective for containing cleaning and purge liquids during an automatically operable cleaning cycle of operation.
