Abstract:
A method of preparing particles of a lignocellulosic material for the manufacture of a finished product, such as a particle board, includes the steps of chemically modifying the lignocellulosic material by impregnating the lignocellulosic material with a suitable anhydride in a non-aqueous solvent; applying to the particles of lignocellulosic material an adhesion promoter to promote the adherence of a thermoplastic resin to the surfaces of the particles of lignocellulosic material; and applying to the particles a thermoplastic resin in dry powder form, so that after the application of the adhesion promoter, the thermoplastic resin adheres to the surfaces of the particles of lignocellulosic material, the thermoplastic resin having been surfaced modified by irradiation or by fluorination; and removing any solvent present.
Abstract:
A method and system of forming a fire door core are provided. Hydraulic binder and resin are supplied from raw material bins and mixed to provide a submixture. Exfoliated vermiculite is then mixed with the submixture to provide a mixture that is deposited into a plurality of compression molds. Each of the filled molds are pressed in a press at a predetermined temperature at a predetermined pressure for a predetermined period of time sufficient to harden the mixture into a hardened slab. The hardened slabs are then removed from the molds, impregnated with water or steam in a water impregnation assembly and dried in a drying assembly.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a finished product from exfoliated vermiculite particles includes the steps of impregnating the exfoliated vermiculite particles with an impregnating composition consisting of a mineral oil and a liquid thermosetting resin, optionally with a catalyst therefor. Thereafter, the exfoliated vermiculite particles are compressed with heating to allow the mineral oil to infuse the exfoliated vermiculite particles and polymerize the thermosetting resin to form the finished product.
Abstract:
The invention provides a method of agglomeration (10) which has the steps of mixing a feedstock (12) of small particles which have an average particle size of 3 mm or less with a binder (14) which is in the form of a polyvinyl alcohol in the form of an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution in a first blender (16) to form a binder mixture (18), reacting a gelling agent (20) with the feedstock and the binder and processing the binder mixture to deliver an agglomerate (22).
Abstract:
A finished product from lignocellulose, such as a length of wood or chipboard, is impregnated with a composition containing a thermosetting resin in a nonaqueous solvent, and a styrene polymer in a nonaqueous solvent. Excess impregnating composition is removed from the impregrnated material. The solvent or solvents are also removed. The thermosetting resin may thereafter be subjected to temperature conditions for polymerization to form a finished product.
Abstract:
A method of preparing a starting material for the subsequent manufacture of a finished product such as a board, from a feedstock selected from the group consisting of a lignocellulosic material, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite or a mixture of two or three thereof, includes the steps of providing the feedstock in the form of substantially dry finely divided lignocellulosic fibres or substantially dry finely divided exfoliated vermiculite or expanded perlite particles or a mixture thereof; mixing the feedstock with a suitable amount of a thermosetting resin in finely divided dry powder form and a suitable amount of the hydraulic binder in finely divided dry powder form; and optionally subjecting this starting material to suitable conditions of temperature and pressure to cause the thermosetting resin to set to form a cohesive product thereafter, there may be provided to the cohesive product, water in an amount sufficient for the hydration of the hydraulic binder so that the hydraulic binder sets to form the finished product.
Abstract:
A method of preparing particles of an exfoliated vermiculite for the manufacture of a finished product, such as a particle board, includes the steps of, if necessary, chemically modifying the vermiculite by impregnating the vermiculite with a suitable anhydride in a non-aqueous solvent; if necessary, applying to the particles of vermiculite an adhesion promoter to promote the adherence of a resin to the surfaces of the particles of vermiculite; and resinating the particles of vermiculite either with a thermoplastic resin which has been surface modified by irradiation or by fluorination, or by an isocyanate thermosetting resin, or by a dry powder novolac thermosetting resin; and if necessary removing any solvent present.

Abstract:
A composition for impregnation of a lignocellulosic material such as wood or wood particles, comprises a high boiling point tar acid or a pitch derived from coal; a solvent for the tar acid or pitch selected from a low carbon alcohol, an aceotrope of a low carbon alcohol and another solvent, and a mixture of a lower carbon alcohol and water; a phenol formaldehyde resole resin; an acid catalyst for the phenol formaldehyde resole resin; and preferably a formaldehyde donor or a precursor thereof. There is also disclosed a method of preparing a finished product from a lignocellulosic material by using the impregnating composition.
