Abstract: A method involves determining a threshold error rate that will result on data stored on a magnetic disk surface of a disk drive being unrecoverable. The method also involves determining a seek velocity that will overwrite sufficient portions of the data such the data will exhibit at least the threshold error rate. The disk drive performs at least one traversal of the magnetic disk surface with a head of the disk drive that emits an erase field during the at least one traversal at the seek velocity. The at least one traversal sanitizes the data.

Abstract: A magnetic recording medium includes a recording surface comprising a first recording layer having a first ferromagnetic resonant frequency and a second recording layer having a second ferromagnetic resonant frequency. A recording head arrangement is configured for microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) and writing user data to the first recording layer. The write-assist arrangement is configured to generate a radiofrequency assist magnetic field at a frequency that corresponds to the first ferromagnetic resonant frequency. Abstract: Apparatus and method for proactively cleaning a data storage surface subjected to a mechanical disturbance. In some embodiments, data access commands are serviced by a data storage device to transfer user data between a host device and a rotatable data recording surface using a radially moveable data transducer. A media cleaning operation is scheduled and performed in response to the detection of a mechanical disturbance event externally applied to the data storage device. The media cleaning operation involves sweeping the data transducer across the data recording surface from a first radius to a second radius over a selected time duration. The entirety of the data recording surface is swept if sufficient time is available between pending commands to maintain a desired host data transfer rate. Otherwise, a partial cleaning operation is scheduled in which portions of the recording surface are successively cleaned between the servicing of the pending commands.

Abstract: A slider generally comprises a substrate forming at least part of a body of the slider, a heat-assisted media recording (HAMR) read/write transducer proximate the substrate, and an end cap substantially encapsulating the HAMR read/write transducer. The end cap has a first surface proximate the substrate and a second surface as a trailing edge of the slider. The end cap has a first coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) similar to a corresponding CTE of the substrate. At least a portion of the second surface of the end cap has a second CTE that is lower than the first CTE. A body of the end cap is intermediate to the first and second surfaces of the end cap and has a CTE intermediate of the first and second CTE.

For example, a controller of a data storage array can implement a process to determine when, or if, to redeploy a data storage device from a first data storage usage or tier having a first performance requirement to a second data storage usage or tier having a second performance requirement.
