A process and apparatus is disclosed for distributing a gas stream into a downwardly flowing catalyst stream in a vessel by feeding the gas stream into a center of the vessel or the catalyst stream into a hollow cap. The gas stream enters the cap and exits the cap flowing upwardly to contact the catalyst stream.

An apparatus for heating a process fluid is presented. The apparatus is for improving the foot-print of a fired heater and to reduce the fired heater volume. The apparatus includes a W-shaped process coil to provide for a smaller single-cell fired heater, and a fired heater with a lower profile, providing flexibility in positioning relative to downstream reactors.

An apparatus for use in radial flow reactors is presented. The apparatus includes a first partition and a second partition with support members coupled therebetween. The first partition include a first opening and a second opening to allow the passage of fluid therethrough. A baffle extends into a flow channel formed by adjacent support members to obstruct an upper or lower portion of the first opening to interrupt a portion of the fluid flow therethrough.

A unit for processing a liquid/gas phase mixture, a mercaptan oxidation apparatus, and a method of processing a liquid/gas phase mixture are provided. In an embodiment, a unit for processing a liquid/gas phase mixture includes a vessel that is adapted to receive the liquid/gas phase mixture and a distributor that is disposed in the vessel. The distributor is adapted for flow of the liquid/gas phase mixture into the vessel, and the distributor includes a first outlet pipe that is horizontally disposed within the vessel. The first outlet pipe includes top orifices and bottom orifices that are spaced along the first outlet pipe, and the first outlet pipe is in fluid communication with the vessel through the top orifices and the bottom orifices. The top orifices have a smaller cross-sectional area than the bottom orifices.

An inclined baseplate for a radial bed reactor improves solids flow from the bottom of the reactor. Gas flow can be improved by utilizing an aerated baseplate or by providing a non-porous section of outer perforated cylinder in the area below the level of the bottom of the inner perforated cylinder.

The process coils experience high temperatures at the outlets. The film temperature optimizer includes baffles or means for changing the flow of the fired heating gas around the process coils near the coil outlets. The baffles are positioned near the process coil outlets.

A fired heater is provided with u-shaped coils is provided. The coils have at least one inlet, at least one inlet section, at least one outlet and at least one outlet section. Burners are provided in both the center of the end wall of the fired heater and on the floor of the side wall. The fired heater is more compact and provides more even heat distribution compared to prior art heaters.
