Abstract:
Techniques described herein may use a computing device, such as a smartphone or tablet computer, that is attached to a local area network, as a storage device or supplemental storage device for a set-top box (STB) that is also attached to the local area network. In one implementation, the STB may stream, to the computing device, video content corresponding to a television program that is being viewed by a user of the STB. In response to a command such as a rewind or unpause operation, the STB may request the video content from the computing device; receiving the requested video content from the computing device; and satisfying the unpause or rewind operation, based on the received video content.
Abstract:
A device may receive a numeric code representing an alphanumeric character; and determine one or more programming channel names including the alphanumeric character represented by the numeric code. Each of the one or more channel names may be associated with a television broadcast network. The device may the one or more programming channel names; receive a selection of a particular programming channel, of the one or more programming channels; and present content associated with the selected programming channel.

Abstract:
A device receives a request for a digital video recorder (DVR) to record digital contents. The device identifies the digital contents using metadata included in the request, such as a channel and a time associated with the digital contents, to access additional metadata from an electronic program guide (EPG), such as an identifier. The device uses the additional metadata from the EPG to determine whether the digital contents are available via video on demand (VOD). For example, the device may compare the identifier and/or other metadata for the digital contents to metadata associated with VOD content, such as a VOD catalog. The device may selectively prevent the DVR from recording the digital contents if the digital contents are available via VOD.

Abstract:
An approach for broadcasting an alarm to a plurality of devices associated with an alarm group. The alarm is associated with a plurality of devices in an alarm group. The approach includes receiving a request. The request designates a plurality of devices as the alarm group. The approach includes determining an implementation of the alarm for the alarm group based on the request. The approach also includes broadcasting the alarm to the plurality of devices in the alarm group based on the implementation.
Abstract:
A set-top box (STB) causes a display device to present a notification during a time period. The notification identifies digital contents, such as television show, available for access via the STB. If no response to notification is received during the time period or the display device or STB is inactive, a notification message is sent to an associated user device. The notification message may be generated based on metadata extracted from electronic programming guide (EPG) data, and the notification message may include an indication that the digital contents are available for access via the STB. The notification message may also identify an available action related to the digital contents. For example, the action may relate to recording the digital contents or requesting another notification or notification message related to another broadcast of the digital contents. Response data requesting execution of the action may be received from the user device.
