Abstract: Anion-exchange membranes are useful for electro-membrane processes such as electrodialysis (water desalination, separation of inorganics from organic molecules, separation of specific inorganic ion, etc.), in-situ ion-exchange and ion substitution, electro-deionization for producing ultrapure water, polymer electrolyte membrane for alkaline fuel cell and electrolysis applications. The present invention discloses an acid and base resistant fluorinated hydrocarbon based anion-exchange membrane and its method of preparation thereof. In the first step co-polymerization is carried out between N-isopropylacrylamide and 1-vinylimidazole. In the second step, obtained inter-polymer of isopropylacrylamide-co-vinylimidazole co-polymer is mixed with poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-co-HFP) (IA-co-VI/PVDF-co-HFP), which is used for casting membrane film of desired thickness. The obtained casted membrane thin film is quaternized in methyl iodide solution.

Abstract: In a platinum group metal supported catalyst column, a platinum group metal supported catalyst is a catalyst in which at least one of platinum group metal nanoparticles, platinum group metal ions, and platinum group metal complex ions is supported on an ion exchanger, wherein the exchanger is composed of a continuous skeleton phase and a continuous pore phase, the thickness of the continuous skeleton is 1-100 μm, the average diameter of the continuous pore is 1-1000 μm, the total pore volume is 0.5-50 mL/g, the ion exchange capacity per weight in a dry state is 1-9 mg equivalent/g, and the ion exchanger is non-particulate organic porous ion exchanger in which the ion exchange groups are distributed in the ion exchanger, the amount of platinum group metal nanoparticles, etc., supported is 0.004-20 wt % in a dry state, and a platinum group metal scavenger is provided at the backward stage catalyst.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a granulated or pelletized weak anion exchange medium from a phenol-containing organic material like peat, followed by low-temperature torrefaction of the granules to produce a high degree of physical stability of the granules at high-pH conditions, followed by chemical pretreatment of the stable granule via a hydrolysis reaction, and optionally surface treatment with acids, followed by the main chemical treatment of the hydrolyzed granule via separate aldehyde and amine reagents, or alternatively via an adduct reagent like hexamethylenetetramine is provided by this invention. The weak anion exchange medium of this invention can be used in a variety of aqueous solution treatment processes, such as wastewater treatment for removing mineral acids like H2SO4, HNO3, HCl, HBr, HF, H3PO4, HI, or formic acid from the wastewater. The resulting anion exchanger medium is particularly useful for treating wastewaters in a low-pH environment.

Compositions can have the formula Support-(X)—N(R1, R2)-R3-L-Ar, or a salt thereof, wherein: Support is a chromatographic solid support; X is a spacer or absent; R1 and R2 are each selected from hydrogen and an alkyl comprising 1-6 carbons; R3 is an alkyl comprising 1-6 carbons or a cyclo alkyl comprising 1-6 carbons; L is NR4, O, or S; wherein R4 is hydrogen or an alkyl comprising 1-6 carbons; and Ar is an aryl. Methods are also provided for using solid supports and ligands to purify biomolecules such as monomeric antibodies.

Abstract: The invention includes compositions comprising curable imidazolium-functionalized poly(room-temperature ionic liquid) copolymers and homopolymers. The invention further includes methods of preparing and using the compositions of the invention. The invention further includes novel methods of preparing thin, supported, room-temperature ionic liquid-containing polymeric films on a porous support. In certain embodiments, the methods of the invention avoid the use of a gutter layer, which greatly reduces the overall gas permeance and selectivity of the composite membrane. In other embodiments, the films of the invention have increased gas selectivity and permeance over films prepared using methods described in the prior art.

Abstract: A method for synthesizing a poly(phenylene) with high ion selectivity comprises dissolving an alkyl halide poly(phenylene) in a polar aprotic solvent to form a nonaqueous solution and adding an anhydrous nucleophile to the nonaqueous solution to replace the halide of the alkyl halide poly(phenylene) with a cationic group of the nucleophile. The poly(phenylene) can be used in anion exchange membranes.
