    Abstract: A turbofan gas turbine engine comprises, in axial flow sequence, a heat exchanger module, a fan assembly, a compressor module, a turbine module, and an exhaust module. The fan assembly comprises a plurality of fan blades defining a fan diameter (D). The heat exchanger module is in fluid communication with the fan assembly by an inlet duct, and the heat exchanger module comprises a plurality of radially-extending hollow vanes arranged in a circumferential array with a channel extending axially between each pair of adjacent hollow vanes. The heat exchanger module has a square axial cross-sectional profile, where a side length of the square cross-section is D.

    Abstract: The disclosure provides a system to heat a portion of a gas turbine (GT) engine of a power generation system in a standby mode. The system includes a first heated fluid manifold and a first conduit coupling a heated fluid supply external to the GT engine to one or more fatigue-prone components within the GT engine. A first plurality of valves is configured to control an amount of heated fluid flow through the first conduit between the heated fluid supply and the one or more fatigue-prone components. A controller is in communication with the first plurality of valves. The controller adjusts an open extent of at least one of the first plurality of valves to control a temperature of the one or more fatigue-prone components. The external heated fluid supply may be an auxiliary system or a second GT engine operating in non-standby mode.

    Abstract: An aircraft engine assembly includes a gas turbine engine having an intake channel configured to receive an incoming flow of air and thereby form an intake flow of air, the intake channel configured to turn the received incoming flow of air from an incoming flow direction to a first axial direction of the gas turbine engine, the incoming flow direction reverse of the first axial direction, and an electric machine coupled with the low pressure shaft and located at the aft end of the gas turbine engine proximate the intake channel, the electric machine in heat exchange communication with the intake flow of air such that the electric machine transfers heat to the incoming flow of air within the intake channel when the electric machine is operated.

    Abstract: An apparatus includes a heater having a combustion chamber, an inlet port to provide fuel into the combustion chamber, and an outlet port to expel exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. The combustion chamber may be insulated. An exhaust channel is operably coupled to the outlet port and is configured to convey exhaust gases away from the combustion chamber. A nozzle, such as a de Laval nozzle, is incorporated into the exhaust channel and is configured to accelerate the exhaust gases through the exhaust channel. A tesla turbine is operably coupled to the exhaust channel and is configured to generate rotational power from the accelerated exhaust gases. In certain embodiments, disks of the tesla turbine are coated with a catalytic material to break apart unburned particles in the exhaust gases. A corresponding method is also disclosed.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a drive system for a vehicle, in particular for a hybrid vehicle, with at least one power unit and at least one drive battery, which are electrically coupled to one another. The power unit includes at least one gas turbine, which has at least one first compressor for compressing aspirated combustion air, at least one turbine for driving the first compressor and at least one combustion chamber, arranged in between, which is intended for burning an air/fuel mixture and is fluid-connected to the first compressor (32) and the turbine (33). The power unit also includes at least one reformer for reforming a vaporized fuel, in particular vaporized methanol, into a synthesis gas, wherein the reformer is connected to the combustion chamber for supplying the synthesis gas and at least one generator, which is mechanically coupled to the gas turbine for accepting and/or introducing a rotary movement. The drive battery is electrically connected to the generator of the power unit and is adapted to supply electrical energy to at least one electric motor for driving the vehicle and/or to the generator.

    Abstract: An exhaust energy recovery system (EERS) and associated methods for an engine are disclosed. An embodiment of an EERS, for example, includes an inlet duct that is configured to divert exhaust gas from an exhaust duct of the engine into the recovery system and an outlet duct configured to return the exhaust gas to the exhaust duct downstream of the inlet duct. The recovery system is configured to heat components or fluids associated with engine to operating temperatures. The recovery system may be part of a mobile power system that is mounted to a single trailer and includes an engine and a power unit such as a high pressure pump or generator mounted to the trailer. Methods of operating and purging recovery systems are also disclosed.
