Abstract: Disclosed are methods of mass spectrometry that use charge reduction techniques to reduce the average charge of the ions to increase the mass to charge ratio spacings between different charge states for the ion species prior to mass analysis. In embodiments there is disclosed a method for determining a collision cross section for an ion species, wherein an ion mobility is determined for an ion species in a first state without charge reduction and the mass to charge ratios for the ion species are then measured in a second, charge-reduced state. The average charge determined for the ion species in the first state is then used together with the average mass determined from the ion species in the second state and the ion mobility determined for the ion species in the first state to determine a collision cross section for the ion species in the first state.

Abstract: An arrangement for analyzing solids includes a laser ablation chamber, a gas flow vacuum pump, and cell and mixed gas feeds. The pump has a first sample gas tube, second mixed gas tube, nozzle, and expansion chamber. The pump is downstream of the ablation chamber. The first tube starts from the ablation chamber. The first tube terminates at the nozzle at the transition to the expansion chamber. The second tube terminates at the expansion chamber. The ablation chamber is operated at a negative pressure. In the ablation chamber, a primary ablation plasma is formed from a sample and condensed to form an aerosol and, together with the cell gas, form the sample gas. Due to the flow of the mixed gas in the second tube, the pump also carries along sample gas in the first tube. The sample and mixed gases are combined in the expansion chamber before analysis.

Abstract: An ionizing system includes a flange device for connection to a mass spectrometer or ion mobility spectrometer having the property of providing a barrier between the lower pressure region of the spectrometer and a higher pressure region substantially at atmospheric pressure, and a channel therethrough providing fluid communication between the higher and lower pressure regions. A plate device independent of the flange device which can accommodate multiple samples, such as a sample plate device, when placed over the channel in the flange device substantially seals the channel. Sliding the sample plate device while in intimate contact with the flange device provides a means to sequentially and rapidly expose said samples to the opening of the channel and thus the lower pressure region. Samples are ionized when exposed to the lower pressure region in as little as one sample per second using multiple ionization methods.

Abstract: A measured mass spectrum and intensity data provided as a function of m/z and at least one additional dimension are received. Peaks of the measured spectrum are compared to peaks of each of a plurality of library mass spectra. A set of library mass spectra is identified using a fit score. For each spectrum of the set, a group of related peaks of the measured spectrum calculated using a deconvolution algorithm is recalculated. The recalculation lowers a threshold for selection in the group if a matching peak of the library spectrum contributed to the fit score. A group of related peaks of the measured spectrum is produced for each library spectrum. For each spectrum of the set, peaks of the group are compared to peaks of the library spectrum and a purity score is calculated. At least one library spectrum of the set with the highest purity score is identified.

Abstract: An analytical instrument produces intensity versus time measurements or intensity versus m/z measurements for each acquisition of n acquisitions using m instrument parameter values for each acquisition of n acquisitions, wherein n is a number greater than or equal to two and m is a number equal to or greater than one. For each acquisition of the n acquisitions, the instrument stores a data file that includes m one or more instrument parameter values applied to the instrument, producing n data files. A first data file of the n data files for a first acquisition is retrieved. A next data file of the n data files of a next acquisition is retrieved. The m corresponding parameter values of the first data file and the next data file are compared. If any corresponding parameter values differ between the first data file and the next data file, a notification of an instrument parameter difference corresponding to a name of the next data file is displayed.

Abstract: A start-up routine for a mass spectrometer is performed automatically upon switching ON the mass spectrometer. The mass spectrometer comprises a plurality of functional modules connected thereto, each module operable to perform a predetermined function of the mass spectrometer in use. The start-up routine comprises detecting which functional modules are present in the set of a plurality of functional modules connected to the mass spectrometer, and performing one or more steps of the start-up routine based upon the results of the detection. The mass spectrometer automatically determines whether configuration information is stored locally in respect of each one of the detected functional modules, and, for the or each one of the detected functional modules for which such information is found to be stored locally, automatically uses the information in configuring the mass spectrometer, and, for any detected functional module(s) for which such information is not found to be stored locally, automatically obtains configuration information for the detected functional module(s) from a remote server, and uses the information in configuring the mass spectrometer.
