    Abstract: Systems and methods are described for introducing one or more fluid streams from a nozzle having one or more shaped channels to one or more material surfaces and removing the fluid streams for scanning for chemical species of interest. A nozzle embodiment includes, but is not limited to, a nozzle body configured to couple to a positionable nozzle arm support for positioning the nozzle with respect to a material surface, the nozzle body defining at least one fluid port to receive a fluid; and a nozzle hood coupled to the nozzle body, the nozzle hood defining an elongated shaped channel having a first fluid channel and a second fluid channel extending from the at least one fluid port, the first fluid channel and the second fluid channel configured to direct fluid along the material surface within at least a portion of each of the fluid channels.

    Abstract: A sample support body includes: an insulating substrate having a measurement region formed with a plurality of through holes; a frame formed with an opening part opening to a first face and a second face to correspond to the measurement region, and formed on the first surface such that the opening part overlaps the measurement region when viewed from a thickness direction of the substrate; an adhesive layer to bond the substrate and the frame and having a protruding portion protruding from an inner surface of the opening part toward the measurement region; and a conductive layer having a first portion provided along the inner surface of the opening part, a second portion provided along the first surface of the measurement region, and a third portion provided along a surface of the protruding portion so as to connect the first portion and the second portion.

    Abstract: The invention provides a trapped ion mobility separator (TIMS) and methods to operate it wherein an ion region of the TIMS, through which ions travel along an axis from an entrance to an exit, has an elongate cross-sectional profile perpendicular to the axis with a long dimension and a short dimension. First and second counteracting forces on the ions along the axis are provided, wherein at least one of the first and second forces has an effect on the ions that is ion mobility dependent, and wherein at least one of the first and second forces varies spatially along the axis such that ions are trapped and separated by ion mobility. Different embodiments provide the first and second forces using different combinations of gas flow and electric field potential, and employ various electrode structures that provide the system with different advantageous characteristics.

    Abstract: A coupling tube made of a stretchable elastomeric material. The “stretchy” coupling tubing allows for improved reliability/repeatability of coupling performance. For example, the stretch provided can take up tolerances between positions of imager and reader instruments. In one example, the stretch can take up tolerances between positions of the junction between the rigid portion of tubing inside the IMC unit and the injector to an ionization source. The coupling tube may also be provided with a reduced inner diameter (ID) as compared to standard coupling components. A taper in the inner diameter (ID) can occur before the flow enters the stretchable coupling tube. Barbed ends may also be provided for securing the coupling tube into place.

    Abstract: An imaging unit includes a MCP, a fluorescent body, and an imager. The MCP is provided on a flight route of an ionized sample that is a component of a sample ionized and emits electrons in accordance with the ionized sample. The fluorescent body is disposed in a subsequent stage of the MCP and emits fluorescent light in accordance with the electrons emitted from the MCP. The imager is disposed in a subsequent stage of the fluorescent body and has a shutter mechanism configured to be capable of switching an open state in which the fluorescent light is imaged by allowing the fluorescent light from the fluorescent body to pass through and a close state in which the fluorescent light is not imaged by blocking the fluorescent light from the fluorescent body. An afterglow time of the fluorescent body is 12 ns or shorter.

The mass spectrometry sample substrates, sample strips, and cartridges can be used in paper spray mass spectrometry to detect and quantify one or more analytes present in a biological sample. Also disclosed are methods for collecting and concentrating one or more analytes from a biological sample, as well as for storing a biological sample that includes one or more analytes.
