A sensor for detection of a target species is provided. The sensor includes a capture layer on an organic semi-conductor to which biomolecules may be bound. The capture layer polymer is deposited from a non-aqueous solution and the polymer is insoluble in water and has reactive groups for interaction with the analyte directly or via a conjugated species. Organic electronic devices, for example organic thin-film transistors having the capture layer are also provided. Use of a capture layer provides a low cost high quality biosensor which may be reliably produced in large quantities.

Methods are provided for establishing a threshold exposure limit to a chemical or biological agent for the members of a target species taking into account the potential for variation in responses among the members of that species. Exemplary exposures include maximum safe exposure to a toxic agent, or minimum effective dose for a pharmaceutical. The method is particularly useful under circumstances wherein variation in responsiveness to the agent cannot be ascertained by directly exposing members of the target species to the agent.

A temperature swing adsorption process for the removal of a target species, such as an acid gas, from a gas mixture, such as a natural gas stream. Herein, a novel multi-step temperature swing/pressure swing adsorption is utilized to operate while maintaining very high purity levels of contaminant removal from a product stream. The present process is particularly effective and beneficial in removing contaminants such as CO2 and/or H2S from a natural gas at relatively high adsorption pressures (e.g., at least 500 psig) to create product streams of very high purity (i.e., very low contaminant levels).

A gas detector and process for detecting a target gas species, such as a fluorine-containing species in a gas containing same, e.g., an effluent of a semiconductor processing tool undergoing etch cleaning with HF, NF3, etc. The gas detector in one aspect employs a nickel-containing filament that is sensitive to the fluorine-containing species, which can function both as a sensing component and as a heat source when elevated temperature sensing is required. The gas detector in one aspect employs an elongated gas sensor element that can be vertically mounted on a support structure. Vertical mounting of such elongated gas sensor element on the support structure significantly improves the signal strength, reduces the response time, minimizes the footprint of the gas detector, and provides structural flexibility for accommodating thermal expansion/contraction of such gas sensor element.
