Abstract:
1,273,087. Coating-apparatus. ACUMETER LABORATORIES Inc. 21 Aug., 1970 [5 Jan., 1970], No. 40449/70. Heading B2L. Apparatus for coating a substrate comprises a reservoir 6 for coating medium, a pump 6 for pumping the medium from the reservoir through a distribution member having a value 2' movable between two positions to open and block fluid communication between inlet position 9 and an outlet position 11 and thence to a nozzle member 13, the nozzle 13 having an inlet passage 11 and an outlet passage 30 and an intermediate passage 13", the intermediate and outlet passages being wider in the transverse direction than the inlet passage and the intermediate passage 13" providing an expansion chamber. The valve 2' has an opening 14 which connects the fluid supply line 4' with either the outlet 11 or return pipe 4" and is moved between these positions by a piston and cylinder 16 controlled by a valve (not shown) in the substrate feed mechanism. The dimension of the slit in the application nozzle is also varied by a rotatable screw drive 30' from the substrate feed mechanism in order to produce an even coating.

Abstract:
Novel fluid application processes and apparatus wherein fluid extruded through a nozzle is wiped off the nozzle at various angles of attack by periodically forcing a moving sheet, web, or other article against the nozzle in a controlled manner as the same moves past the nozzle, thus to produce predetermined coatings upon the sheet, web, or other article, ranging from an array of dots and lines to an array of bands or elongated continuous bands of coating fluid.
Abstract:
A three-way poppet valve for directing the flow of a fluid that will permit precise, constant thickness patterns of fluid coating upon a moving surface and cause a minimum of after-drool when the coating process is ceased. The three-way poppet valve assembly is also provided with means to rapidly change the direction of fluid flow to create rapid on/off fluid deposition cycle times and facilitate the formation of minimum length coatings on a rapidly moving surface.
Abstract:
This disclosure is concerned with independent fluid dispensing by a multi-slot cavity nozzle with opposing zig-zag fluid path baffle-diversion operation, generating a pair of adjacent line fluid depositions upon a web moving past the nozzle, and enabling the separate but simultaneous use of adhesives and other fluid media of different characteristics and in widely flexible multi-layer coating patterns including superposed, side-by-side, spaced and other multi-layer patterns.
Abstract:
A novel hot-melt and other viscous fluid and coating screen-printing method and apparatus in which a line of fluid is extruded against a predetermined region of a rotary screen opposite which a web is drawn to transfer the fluid extruded at said region through the screen pores, with large cross-section fluid extrusion sealed against the inner wall of the screen as the same rotates past said region, and with features of fluid pressure and screen heating synchronous and proportional to line speed, inerted inner screen cavity construction (and possible exterior inerting of the screen), and novel web drawing roller positioning, including web-movement rotation of the screen, and all accommodating high viscosity fluids and high web speeds.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for the hot melt or other fluid coating and the web handling of lightweight low web-tension-supporting non-woven (1) and similar materials, having a novel nozzle region using entrance and exit web-supporting surfaces (6),(12') and positioning in order to compensate for web deflection caused by the fluid coating ejection forces that otherwise render the coatings non-uniform and destroy sharp leading and trailing edges of intermittent coatings.
Abstract:
A method of producing silicone-coated release papers, labels and tapes and the like in an in-line procedure through the use of a radiation-insensitive hot melt barrier coating (2) on poor porous and highly absorbent paper substrates (1), and upon which barrier coating (2) a silicone coating (3) is radiation cured (4).
Abstract:
A roll coating applicator and method for applying a coating fluid to a moving web which includes applying coating fluid through a nozzle to a rotating roll, positioning one or more rolls in coating fluid engaging contact with each other and at least one of which is in coating fluid engaging contact with the first roll, rotating the second roll at a greater rotational speed than the first roll and positioning a portion of a moving web in coating fluid engaging contact with the second or subsequent roll.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for enabling integrated in-line synchronous hotmelt or similar adhesive coatings of web materials and simultaneously radiation-cured silicone coatings for use therewith, as for release purposes, through the use of coating and curing stations controlled with web speed and compatably with the adhesive application and hardening steps.
