Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel lubricant and a friction modifier containing a solid lubricant and a binding agent as needed in an aqueous medium. SOLUTION: The problem to be solved is appropriate to lubricate steel-steel interfaces (e.g., tractor-trailer couplings, rail-wheel systems and other heavy duty applications). The invention is attained by a composition containing a friction modifier having a high or very high positive coefficient of friction such that the coefficient of friction is considerably higher than that of the solid lubricant. The invention further relates to a composition containing the binding agent and the friction modifier having a high or very high positive coefficient of friction in an aqueous medium. A consumable applicator comprising one or more conduits in a fluid communication with a liquid composition dispensing system wherein the liquid composition comprises friction control components. The consumable applicator comprises a solid body having hardness of less than or equal 150 HB, a housing and a biasing member within said housing for advancing the consumable applicator toward a dispensing end. The consumable applicator may be used for applying a friction control consumable to sliding metallic parts such as the railway rails or wheels.

The present invention provides a water based friction control composition comprising a binder a rheological control agent, and optionally a lubricant. The liquid friction control composition may also comprise other components such as a wetting agent, a consistency modifier, and a preservative. The liquid friction control compositions may be used to modify the interfacial friction characteristics in sliding and rolling-sliding contact such as steel wheel-rail systems including mass transit and freight systems. A method of reducing lateral force, reducing energy consumption, or controlling friction between a metal surface and a second metal surface by applying the composition to metal surface, for example a top of rail or wheel, is also provided. The composition may be sprayed onto the rail surface.

A solid composition stick applicator is provided. The applicator comprises an applicator body having a first and second end, the second end having an opening through which a solid composition stick is dispensed. Within the applicator is housed a helical tension spring having a first spring end and a second spring end, the first spring end, second spring end, or both the first and second spring end held at a fixed position with respect to the applicator body. The helical tension spring is wound around a guide system that is housed within the applicator body. A pushing assembly is attached to the helical tension spring and the pushing assembly is movable from a first position at or near the first end of the applicator body, to a second position at or near the second end of the applicator body. Tension within the helical tension spring is greater in the first position than in the second position thereby urging the pushing assembly towards the -second end of the applicator body. The use of a helical tension spring within the applicator greatly increases the life of the applicator under field conditions.

According to the invention there is provided a liquid friction control composition characterized as either having a high and positive friction characteristic or a low and neutral friction characteristic, comprising a retentivity agent. The liquid friction control composition may also comprise other components such as a solid lubricant, a wetting agent, a consistency modifier, and a preservative. The liquid friction control compositions may be used to modify the interfacial friction characteristics in sliding and rolling-sliding contact such as steel wheel-rail systems including mass transit and freight systems.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a synthetic material transferring a substance to a wheel and giving a sufficient brake by providing a flange member as a part of a backing plate, and providing a second friction material generating a frictional level in a specific range on the flange member. SOLUTION: This friction controlled brake shoe 10 is provided with a backing plate 2 having a flange member 8, and a brake lining is fitted to the backing plate 2. The brake lining includes a first friction synthetic material containing at least one of a solid high-positive friction modifier and a solid ultrahigh- positive friction modifier 12 generating the frictional level required for stopping a train between a wheel tread and a rail track. A flange section 14 having a frictional face couplable with the flange of the wheel of a railway rolling stock is fitted to the flange member 8 of the backing plate 2. The flange section 14 is formed with a second friction material containing a solid low-friction coefficient modifier generating the frictional level of about 0.08-0.15 on the faying face between the wheel flange and the rail track.

SOLUTION: The friction control composition comprises (a) about 40 wt.% to about 95 wt.% of water, (b) about 0.5 wt.% to about 50 wt.% of a rheological agent, (c) about 0.5 wt.% to about 2 wt.% of an antioxidant, (d) about 0.5 wt.% to about 40 wt.% of a retentivity agent, (e) about 0 wt.% to about 40 wt.% of a lubricant, and (f) about 0 wt.% to about 25 wt.% of a friction modifier. Wherein, if the lubricant is at about 0 wt.%, then the composition contains at least about 0.5 wt.% of the friction modifier, and wherein if the friction modifier is at about 0 wt.%, then the composition contains at least about 1 wt.% of the lubricant.
