A damper or damped spring, Fig. 6, comprises a piston-rod 15 which has a piston head 16 and is enclosed within a rigid chamber 14 filled with a compressible solid 17a, e.g. of silicone rubber, for producing a damping force on the rod 15 and piston 16 as the rod moves into the cylinder, and means, e.g. a gland 22, for varying the pressure of the solid material so that the type of damping acting upon the rod and piston can be selected. The gland 22, which is screwed into an end 14c of the casing 14 around a piston-rod part 15a, has sealing rings 26, 27 and an extension 28 with an angled buffer surface 29 opposite 'a corresponding buffer surface 30 on the casing 14. The pistonrod part 15b extends through a seal 21 into a compartment 19 in an extension 14b of the casing 14. Instead of, or in addition to, the gland 22 compressible solid may be introduced into the casing through a pipe leading to a reservoir containing compressible solid and provided with pressure adjusting means. According to the pre-set pressure of the material 13 either friction or viscous, i.e. shear, damping is produced on the shaft rod 15a, 15b and on the surfaces 16a, 16b, the inclination of which also has an influence upon the kind of damping produced. Damping also results from plastic flow of solid material 13 through the annular space between the piston 11 and the casing 14 and also from the development of different pressures 'at opposite sides of the piston. In alternative constructions in which the damper also functions as a spring the piston-rod parts are of differing size or the piston-rod extends through one end only of the casing.

A seal for a liquid 4 under pressure comprises a housing 6, a movable plate 8 with an axially extending flange 9, a fixed plate 10, a shaft 2 passing through openings in the plates 8, 10, vent means 24-28 leading from a lip 11 of the flange 9, and resilient material 18, 20, 22 between the plates 8, 10, and preferably within radial holes 16 through the flange 9 and in an annular groove 14, for exerting a sealing pressure against the shaft 2, and preferably the housing 6, on compression between the plates 8, 10. A spring washer 32 maintains a minimum pressure on the material 18 and a low friction slipper seal 34 surrounds the shaft 2, retaining rings 36-42 being provided to further obviate friction and prevent extrusion of the resilient material.
