The invention provides a molded heat insulator made of carbon fiber felt spirally wound to form layers with a carbide present therebetween to integrate the layers substantially without any undulations therebetween. Also provided is a process for producing a molded heat insulator made of carbon fibers, which comprises spirally winding a felt of carbon fibers or the like together with a film and/or net via a carbonizable resin around a take-up member while applying a tension to said film or net to thereby form a laminate, and curing and carbonizing it.

A process for producing high-strength sintered mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) characterized by compression molding and sintering MCMB with a maximum solubility percent (MSP) of 30 to 38 vol. %, wherein MSP refers to a volume reduction (vol. %) caused by heating a given amount of MCMB to 350 °C under the pressure of 10 kgf/cm2. A method of controlling the quality of sintered MCMB molding, obtained by compression molding and sintering MCMB, by heating MCMB held in a given space under a specified pressure and measuring the volume reduction (MSP) thereof.
