Abstract: Pre-treatment methods for polyolefin-based feed streams before depolymerization are described. Polyolefins are separated from other material in the polyolefin-based feed stream using density differences in an aqueous solution, which allows for a pre-treatment method that does not affect the depolymerization catalyst. By removing the non-polyolefin materials from the feed stream, the depolymerization of the polyolefin material can proceed at lower temperatures for longer cycles. This results in a more efficient process with a smaller carbon footprint.

Abstract: Methods of depolymerizing polyolefin-based material into useful petrochemical products using styrene oligomers or polymers, and heat are described. The styrene oligomers or polymers improve the depolymerization reaction by decreasing the half time for the depolymerization, which results in a higher depolymerization rate and a shorter residence time in the depolymerization unit, allowing for a predictable depolymerization reaction, and decreasing the branching or aromatic formations in the product.

The compositions are a composite of at least one zeolite catalyst with one or more co-catalyst(s) that is a solid inorganic material. These composite catalysts, along with heat, are used to both increase the depolymerization reaction rate of the feed streams and suppress poisoning effects of non-polyolefin polymers that may be present. This results in a shorter residence time in the depolymerization unit and more efficient process.
