    Abstract: Homopolymerization and copolymerization of ethene are carried out using a Ziegler catalyst system consisting of (1) a transition metal catalyst component prepared by a method in which (1.1) first (1.1.1) an inorganic oxide substance (I) as a carrier and (1.1.2) a solution (II) of (IIa) a certain oxahydrocarbon and (IIb) a mixture of (IIb1) a vanadium trichloride/alcohol complex, (IIb2) a titanium trihalide or titanium trihalide/alcohol complex and, if desired, (IIb3) a zirconium tetrahalide, are combined with formation of a suspension (III), the latter is evaporated down to form a solid-phase intermediate (IV), (1.2) then (1.2.1) the solid-phase intermediate (IV) obtained from (1.1), and (1.2.2) a dissolved organoaluminum compound (V), are combined with formation of a suspension, the resulting suspended substance being a solid-phase product (VI), (2) an organoaluminum catalyst component and (3) an organohalogen catalyst component. In this process, the transition metal catalyst component (1) used is one prepared by a method in which (1.3) in addition (1.3.1) the product (VI) obtained from (1.2) is reacted with (1.3.2) oxygen, the resulting solid-phase end product (VII) being the novel transition metal catalyst component (1).

    Abstract: Ethylene is homopolymerised, or copolymerised with minor amts. of 3-8C alpha-monoolefins, at 30-200 deg.C and 0.1-200 bar, with a Ziegler catalyst comprising (1) a new transition metal catalyst component, (2) an organo-Al component and (3) an organo-halogen component. (1) The component is prepd. by (1.1) first (1.1.1) contracting (I) finely divided porous SiO2.Al2O3 with particle dia. 1-1000 microns, pore vol. 0.3-3 cc/g and surface 100-1000 square m/g and (1.1.2) a soln. (II) obtd. by mixing (IIa) 100 pts. of 4-18C satd. aliphatic or satd. aliphatic/ aromatic oxahydrocarbon with 1-2 oxa O atoms, and (IIb) 0.01-50 pts. of a mixt. of (IIb1) 100 mols. of VY3.nZ-OH, (IIb2) 0.2-300 mols. of TiCl3 and/or tiBr3 or a complex of formula TiY3.nZ-OH and opt. (IIb3) 1-400 mols. of ZrCl4 and/or ZrBr4, to form a suspension (III), and evaporating the suspension at below 200 deg.C and above the m.pt. of (IIa), to give a solid intermediate (IV), (1.2) contacting (IV) with a soln. in an organic solvent of AlRmX3-m (V), to form a suspension of a solid prod. (VI) and (1.3) contacting the solid (VI), opt. suspended in an inert hydrocarbon with O2 at -25 to 100 deg. C for 5-500 mins., and recovering component (1). a = 0-2; Y = Cl or Br; n = 1-6; Z = monovalent, not more than 10C, satd. aliphatic or satd. aliphatic/aromatic hydrocarbon gp.; X = OR, Cl, Br or H; R = 1-18C hydrocarbon gp.; m = 1-3. (2) The component is AlRmX'3-m.. X' = OR, Cl or H. Ratios by wt. are (I):(IIb) = 1:0.01-2; (IV):(V) = 1:0.05-2. Atomic ratios are transition metal in (1):Al in (2) = 1:0.1-500; transition metal in (VI):O2 = 1:0.01-10. Molar ratio of (2):(3) = 1:0.001-50.

The characteristic feature is that (1) is a solidphase product (VI) obtained using a solution (II) consisting of (IIa) a certain oxahydrocarbon and (IIb) a mixture of (IIb1) a vanadium trichloride/alcohol complex, (IIb2) a titanium trihalide and (IIb3) a zirconium tetrahalide.
