Abstract: Cellulose textile materials and films are dyed or printed by applying a dyestuff, e.g., an azo or anthraquinone dyestuff, containing at least one solubilising group and at least one group of the formula: wherein R1 and R2 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl or hydroxy alkyl group and R3 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or carboxyl group, and also applying, before together with or after the dyestuff, an alkaline agent, and finally fixing the dyestuff by heating. Specified alkaline agents are alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates, and secondary or tertiary alkali metal phosphates. Fixation may be effected by treatment with hot air or steam at 70 DEG -150 DEG C., although in the case of dyeing in a bath at 20 DEG -30 DEG C., fixation may be effected by merely raising the temperature of the bath. Numerous examples of dyeing are given and Example 3 describes the printing of cotton with a dyestuff paste containing urea and sodium alginate. Specified azo dyestuffs are the following:- 1- aminobenzene -4- sulphonic acid --> 1- acrylamino -3- hydroxy -6- methyl-benzene, 1- amino -2- acryloylaminobenzene -2-sulphonic acid --> 1-(3- chlorphenyl) -3- methyl-pyrazolone-(5), 1- aminobenzene -2- carboxylic acid --> 2- acryloylamino -5- hydroxynaphthalene -7- sulphonic acid, 1- amino -4- acyloyl-aminobenzene --> 2- hydroxynaphthalene -6-sulphonic acid, 1- amino-4- (b , b ,- dimethyl-acryloylamino)- benzene --> 2- hydroxynaphthalene -3, 6- disulphonic acid, 1- amino -4- acryloylaminobenzene --> 1-(phenyl -3- sulphonic acid) -3- methylpyrazolone- (5), 1- amino -4- acryloylaminobenzene --> 1-(2- chlorphenyl -5- sulphonic acid) -3- methylpyrazolone -(5), 1- amino -4-acryloylaminobenzene --> 1- benzoylamino -8-hydroxynaphthalene -4, 6- disulphonic acid or 1- amino -3- acryloylaminobenzene --> 1- acryloylamino -8- hydroxynaphthalene -3, 6- disulphonic acid. Specified anthraquinone dyestuffs are of the formulae: Specification 858,183 is referred to.

Abstract: The invention comprises azo dyes which contain; besides at least one water-solubilising group, at least one group of formula: where R1 and R2 are H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or halogen and R3 is H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, halogen or carboxy the group being linked to the dye molecule via an imino group. Preferred are dyes which are free from SO3H groups in the diazo component part of the molecule but which contain at least once, combined by an imino group, a group of formula: where R4 is H, alkyl or halogen and R5 is H or COOH, particularly preferred being those compounds where R4 and R5 are both H. Water-solubilising groups indicated are sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups, which are preferred, and sulphonamide, alkylsulphone and alcoholic hydroxyl groups. The dyes are made by treating appropriate dyes containing a primary or secondary acylatable amino group with the required acylating agent or by conventional diazotisation and coupling processes. Cl p and Br are specified halogen atoms. Methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxyisobutyl are specified alkyl and hydroxyalkyl groups. Indicated diazo components are derived from benzene, diphenylsulphide, -sulphone, -methane and -amine and naphthalene and they may contain as substituents, additional to those indicated above, further groups such as alkyl, alkoxy, aralkyl- and aryl-sulphone, nitro and halo groups. Indicated coupling components are pyrazolones, which advantageously contain residues such as -CH3 and benzene and naphthalene compounds containing, besides phenolic or enolic hydroxy or amino groups, water-solubilising groups as indicated above. Other substituents mentioned for the coupling components are -CO-C(R4)= C(R5)H, combined via an imino group, acylated amino groups, alkyl groups or an azo group. The dyes are used for dyeing and printing-foils, films and textile materials of natural and/or synthetic materials containing carboxylic acid amide groups e.g. wool, silk, polyamides, polyurethanes and leather. Examples are provided of the preparation of monazo dyes from such diazo components as 1- amino -4- acryloyl-aminobenzene, 1- amino -4-(a chloroacryloyl)-aminobenzene -2- sulphonic acid, 1- amino-benzene -4- sulphonic acid, 2- aminobenzoic acid, 2- methyl -5- nitroaniline, 4- acetylaminoaniline, aniline -4- sulphonamide, 4- acyloyl-amino -2- chloroaniline and 4- amino -41-acryloylaminodiphenyl - sulphide, - sulphone, -methane and -amine and coupling components such as 2- naphthol -6- mono- and 3, 6-disulphonic acids, 1-(phenyl -3- sulphonic acid) -3-methyl -5- pyrazolone, N- acryloyl and -benzoyl-1- amino -8- naphthol -4, 6- disulphonic acids and 1- acryloylaminobenzene -3- hydroxy -6-methylbenzene and the disazo dyes 2- amino -5-nitrophenyl-methylsulphone \sQ and 1- amino -4-acryloylaminobenzene \sQ 1, 8- dihydroxynaphthalene -3, 6- disulphonic acid, the former disazo dye being treated with acryloyl chloride, and the dyes prepared are used in processes to provide dyeings of red, orange and violet shades. Specification 857,445 is referred to.

Abstract: The invention comprises water-soluble dyes of formula: [D-]-(CH2OH)n wherein D is an azo or anthraquinone dyestuff radical having at least one water-solubilising group and in which hydrogen atoms susceptible to reaction with formaldehyde have been replaced by methylol groups, and n is 1 to 8. They are prepared by reacting a suitable dye or intermediate with formaldehyde in a medium of pH 6 to 11 and if necessary converting the intermediate to an azo or anthraquinone dye. Specified water-solubilising groups are carboxylic and sulphonic acid or acid amide, ureido or sulphone groups. The dyestuffs dye cellulose, wool, silk, leather and synthetic polyamide and polyurethane fibres, preferably in the presence of acids or acid salts, in red, brown, yellow and blue shades. In examples: (1) the following dyes are reacted with formaldehyde in alkaline medium:-3-aminophenol --> 2-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid, 1-amino- 4-(41-ureido-orcarbonamido - phenyl)- aminoanthraquinone- 2-sulphonic acid, sulphanilic acid --> 2-ureido-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid or 1-ureido-8-naphthol- 3 : 6 -disulphonic acid and sulphanilamide --> 2-ureido -5- naphthol -7- sulphonic acid; (2) the product obtained by reacting phenol with aqueous formaldehyde is coupled with the diazo compound from 1-amino -3 : 4- dichlorobenzene-5- sulphonic acid or anthranilic acid; (3) as in (2) the reaction product of formaldehyde and 3-hydroxyphenylurea is coupled with diazotised sulphanilamide; (4) the dyes sulphanilamide or 4-aminophenylurea --> 2 : 4-dimethylol-phenol are prepared.
