Abstract: Polyhalocopper phthalocyanines having high colour strength are obtained by heating a crude copper phthalocyanine pigment containing ten to sixteen halogen atoms at 60 DEG to 200 DEG C. in the presence of about 0.2 to 10 times the weight of an aromatic compound which is in liquid form under the conditions of treatment and is free from carboxylic and sulphonic groups and has an OH group attached to the nucleus, preferably in the presence of water. Specified aromatic compounds are phenols and naphthols. Specified phthalocyanines are polychloro and polychlorobromo copper phthalocyanines having ten to sixteen halogen atoms and mixtures of different polyhalo copper phthalocyanines. The treatment may be carried out in the presence of additional solvents which are inert under the reaction conditions and are not wholly miscible with water. Examples are given for treating polychloro- and polychlorobromo-phthalocyanine.
