Abstract: 1277909 Polypropylene BADISCHE ANIUN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 28 Oct 1969 [29 Oct 1968] 52693/69 Heading C3P Propylene is polymerized in the gas phase in the presence of a bed of powdered polypropylene by means of a catalyst system comprising (a) an aluminium alkyl compound dissolved in a hydrocarbon and (b) a titanium or vanadium halide compound suspended in a hydrocarbon, one of the components (a) or (b) being fed directly into the stirred powder bed and the other being fed directly into the gas space above the powdered bed, and the component (b) being metered in uniformally. In the examples propylene is forced under pressure into a reactor and suspensions of TiCl 3 . 1 / 3 AlCl 3 in cyclohexane and solutions of Al(C 2 HO) 3 in cyclohexane are introduced (i) into the gas space and powdered bed, respectively, and (ii) into the powdered bed and gas space respectively.

Abstract: A process for removing solvent from polyethylene produced in a high pressure continuous process and from the low-pressure recycle gas comprises the steps of separating the polyethylene from the reaction mixture in a high pressure separator 10 at a pressure of more than 150 atmospheres and while maintaining a definite level of liquid therein is decompressed into a low-pressure separator 13 from which the entrained residual ethylene and solvent are led through a gas cooler 23 into a third separator 24 where the ethylene is substantially freed from solvent and led at atmospheric pressure with the remaining solvent to a countercurrent heat-exchanger 26. The ethylene separated in the high-pressure separator with the bulk of the solvent is cooled in a precooler 16, part of this is expanded and separated from the solvent in a low-temperature separator 19 and returned through said heat-exchanger 26 and a second heat-exchanger 28 to the precompressor 3 where it is mixed with fresh ethylene 1. The remainder of the ethylene from the precooler 16 is further cooled in an after-cooler 21 and supplied to the after-compressor 5 before passing to the reaction vessel 7. Solvent is removed from the system by valves 20 and 25 and enters the system by valve 31. Polyethylene is removed through valve 14.

Abstract: Cooling of softened thermoplastic material in the manufacture of granules, sheet, mouldings or semi-finished products, is achieved by contact with a mixture of water and hydrophobic silica particles. Water droplets are not left on the plastic as occurs with water cooling and the cooled articles do not stick together. Shorter cooling times are required than for air cooling and it is easier to maintain dimensional tolerances. The transparency is also improved since the fast cooling allows higher amorphous contents to be obtained. Specifically the coolant contains 80-95% water and 20-5% SiO2, and especially 90% water + 10% SiO2. A layer less than 1u thick is retained by the plastic and this permits printing to be done without previous oxidation of the surface. Optionally a dyestuff may be included in the coolant.

Abstract: Polyethylenes are produced continuously from a mixture of 100 wt. parts ethylene, 0.5-1.5 ppm (based on ethylene) of a radical polymersn initiator, and 0.05-5 wt. parts of a polymerisn. regulator, at increased temp. and press of 1000-3000 atm., in a tubular reactor having length, diameter ratio of 5000:1-30000:1. The polymerisn, mixture in introduced at 70-120 degrees C and the temp. increases to 230-280 degrees C in the first 5/15 of the tube, is maintained within 5 degrees C of this temp. in the next 9/15 of the tube, and is cooled in the last 1/15 to 30-60 degrees C. The mixture is passed through at 3-30 m/sec. Polymer produced has narrow softening range and also shows good mechanical properties outside this range.
